Men's Golf's Hammer named finalist for the 2022 Byron Nelson Award

Cole Hammer is one of five candidates for annual honor given to the sport’s outstanding graduating senior scholar-athlete.
AUSTIN, Texas — University of Texas Men's Golf senior Cole Hammer has been named one of five finalists for the 2022 Byron Nelson Award presented by Srixon/Cleveland Golf, the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) in cooperation with the Salesmanship Club of Dallas announced Thursday. The award is given annually to a graduating senior men's golfer as the outstanding Division I, II, III or NAIA scholar-athlete of the year and recognizes achievements in the classroom, on the course and in the community.
Hammer is joined in the list of finalists by Spencer Cross (Tennessee), Mason Domecq (Ottawa University – Arizona), William Knauth (Carnegie Mellon) and Trent Phillips (Georgia). This year's winner will be announced on May 11 at the AT&T Byron Nelson luncheon.
A semifinalist for the Ben Hogan Award (national player of the year), Hammer is currently No. 8 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. He has posted a 70.74 stroke average and recorded four top-10 and seven top-15 individual finishes in nine stroke-play events this season. Hammer registered a season-best tie for second at the Southern Highlands Collegiate (Feb. 27-March 1) at 11-under-par 205 (71-67-67) and claimed a tie for seventh at the Western Intercollegiate (April 11-13) with a 54-hole total of 4-over-par 214 (73-70-71).
A two-time All-American Scholar and three-time Academic All-Big 12 first-team selection, Hammer sports 3.65 cumulative grade point average and is graduating this May with a degree in Corporate Communication. His community involvement includes being a three-year member of the Texas Silver Spurs, an honorary men's service organization at The University of Texas who serve as the caretakers of Bevo and benefit the university through service and philanthropic efforts.
Former Longhorn Dylan Frittelli won the Byron Nelson Award in 2012.
