The Longhorns completed a full sweep of a doubleheader, along with a 7-0 victory over Texas Tech on Sunday.
Austin – No. 11 Men's Tennis completed a full sweep of a doubleheader with a 4-0 win over UTRGV that followed a 7-0 victory over Texas Tech on Sunday at the Texas Tennis Center.
The Longhorns won the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3, and followed with singles victories by sophomores No. 85 Siem Woldeab at No. 3, Eshan Talluri at No. 6, and Evin McDonald at No. 5.
Woldeab was first off the court in singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Sam Whitehead, who won the first game of each set on serve, but it was all Woldeab other than that as he set out on 6-0 runs in both. The first set had a stretch of deuce points in three out of four games, but Woldeab won them all to take the score from down 1-0 to up 4-1.
Next up, Talluri played his first dual match of the season and won it against Michael Davis by the same score as Woldeab to extend the Texas lead to 3-0. Talluri opened the match on a 5-0 run and won eight of the first nine games with the only blemish in that stretch a deuce-point break by Davis. After Talluri took a 2-0 lead in the second set on a deuce-point break, Davis responded with one of his own, but that would be it, as Talluri closed on a 4-0 run with two more deuce-point wins at 4-1 and 5-1.
Within a matter of seconds, the match would end as McDonald clinched for the Longhorns with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Chris Lawrance. McDonald opened with a break and a deuce-point hold for 2-0, but Lawrance came back with a 3-0 run to take the lead. However, McDonald turned it on from there with a 9-0 run that included only one deuce point, which opened the second set. Lawrance got one game back on a hold at 5-1, but McDonald served out from there for the win.
Texas had won all six first sets and led in the remaining matches with sophomore No. 66 Eliot Spizzirri up, 7-6 (5), 0-1, against Misha Kvantaliani at No. 1, senior No. 47 Richard Ciamarra leading, 6-3, 1-3 over Carlo Izurieta at No. 2, and junior No. 124 Chih Chi Huang ahead, 6-0, 2-3, against Alberto Mello at No. 4.
Earlier in doubles, the Longhorns quickly got off the court at No. 3 where McDonald and Talluri shutout Kvantaliani and Davis, 6-0, with just two games reaching a deuce point. No. 2 was next where last season's regular pairing of Harper and Huang reunited for a 6-3 win over Whitehead and Lawrance. Each team won a deuce point and the Longhorns secured the only break at 3-1 and maintained it to the finish. In the remaining match, Spizzirri and Ciamarra combined to lead Izurieta and Mello, 5-4, when play stopped. The Vaqueros briefly held a 2-1 lead after a deuce-point break, but the Longhorns got it right back in the next game and later broke for a 5-3 lead that moved to 5-4 on another UTRGV break.
Texas (13-8, 1-1 Big 12) will begin a three-match road stretch to close the regular season by traveling to Fort Worth to face No. 3 TCU on Saturday, April 9, at 3 p.m. CT.
