Carson Foster became the sixth American to swim a sub-1:56 200m IM and ranks 13th in the world all-time.
BUDAPEST, Hungary – Texas Swimming's Carson Foster won the silver medal for the United States in the 200-meter individual medley at the FINA World Championships on Wednesday at the Danube Arena. Foster has captured two medals at the meet, after winning silver in the 400 IM on Saturday.
"Super happy; coming off this past year and two silver medals is way more than I expected," Foster said of his performance. "I am going to celebrate the second place for a little bit, but next goal is to get on top."
In a tight race with France's Leon Marchand, Foster registered a 1:55.71 to finish as the runner-up to Marchand, who touched the wall in 1:55.22, with Daiya Seto of Japan placing third in 1:56.22. Foster's swim topped his previous personal best of 1:56.44, established during the semifinals.
"I was excited," Foster said of his time "I think that was kind of my goal going into this season was to get down into that 1:55 range so now we got more room to improve on and try and break the next barrier – get into the 1:54's."
The Cincinnati, Ohio native became the sixth American to post a sub-1:56 time and the first to do it since Michael Andrew at the 2020 US Olympic Trials in June 2021. He now ranks 13th in world history in the event.
In the men's 200-meter breaststroke, Caspar Corbeau advanced to tomorrow's final for The Netherlands after placing third in his semifinal heat in 2:09.17, the sixth-fastest time in the semis. Corbeau progressed to the semifinals after recording the second-best time in the preliminary heats at 2:09.15.
