The Details
It was North Carolina on the front foot from the opening kickoff as Ally Sentnor managed the Tarheels' first shot at 3:46 as her 15-yard effort from the right wing was saved at the right post by Texas graduate goalkeeper Savannah Madden.
At the 4:48 mark, UNC was at it again as Avery Patterson tried her luck from the right side of the 18-yard box, but saw her 10-yard attempt saved off the goal line near the right post by Texas fifth-year senior defender Cameron Brooks.
The Longhorns finally began settling into the match after the opening 10 minutes. Sophomore forward Holly Ward managed Texas' initial shot of the contest by having a 20-yard try from the top of the box blocked away by the Tarheels defense.
North Carolina missed a golden chance to get on the board during the 19th minute after a cross from the left wing to the back post ended up right in the path of a leaping Tori Dellaperuta. Unfortunately for UNC, her header ventured all the way across goal and over the crossbar.
Madden was forced back into action at 21:01 as Patterson drove an eight-yard shot right to the keeper at the left post.
Back at the other end, Texas came within inches of grabbing the advantage at 26:37. Sophomore forward Trinity Byars raced up the right wing and moved middle where she played the ball left to Worden. The rookie forward gained control and short-hopped a shot from 10 yards out right to UNC goalkeeper Emmie Allen. The net minder got crossed up on the bounce as the ball ricocheted out to her right. Still possessing forward momentum, it somehow scraped right outside the left post for a goal kick.
Just a few minutes later at 31:12, the Longhorns launched a counter attack up field that saw Shimkin take possession on the run. The Rockville Centre, N.Y., native charged into the box and hit a 12-yard shot that forced a diving stop from Allen.
The Tarheels saw another solid opportunity go awry at 32:36 as a cross from the left wing found Ruby Grant at the top of the six-yard-box. While sliding, her shot lifted straight up and over the woodwork for a goal kick.
With time running short in the opening stanza, North Carolina launched its own quick break that ended with Isabel Cox's 10-yard try being blocked away at 40:35.
Out of the halftime break, UNC managed three quick attempts at 46:05, 46:55 and 47:40. Emily Colton's shot from the top of the box at 46:55 proved the best of the bunch as it rattled off the cross bar before Texas could clear its lines.
Just seconds after Texas' Worden missed wide left at 56:14, UNC finally grabbed the advantage at 57:15. Sam Meza took possession outside the top right of the 18 and passed ahead to Julia Dorsey inside the box. She crossed a ball through the middle where Patterson beat a defender to finish low-and-left of Madden from 12 yards to make it 1-0.
The Longhorns came desperately close to locating the equalizer at 70:02 as sophomore midfielder Lexi Missimo tried her luck from 19 yards out only to watch her shot roll just inches outside the left post.
UNC eventually doubled its lead to 2-0 during the 79th minute as Patterson finished off another cross by driving a shot into the lower right corner from 14 yards.
Down the stretch, Texas had two more opportunities to get on the board. In the 85th minute, fifth-year senior defender Carlee Allen had a corner drop to her in a crowd of defenders near the left post, but she couldn't get off a shot before UNC cleared the ball away.
Regan tried her luck from 25-plus yards out at 89:21 but saw her effort blocked away as North Carolina finished off its two-goal triumph.
