PARIS, France — University of Texas Men's Golf incoming freshman Christiaan Maas will compete for his home country of South Africa in the prestigious World Amateur Team Championship on August 31-September 3 (Wednesday-Saturday). Maas will be one of four individuals representing South Africa, as he will be joined by Eden Thompson, Christo Lamprecht and Aldrich Potgieter.
The World Amateur Team Championships are a biennial international amateur golf competition. Each team plays 18-holes of stroke play for four days. In each round, the total of the two lowest scores from each team constitutes the team score for the round. The four-day (72-hole) total is the team's score for the championship. The winning team in the men's competition receives custody of the Eisenhower Trophy for the ensuing two years.
Le Golf National (Albatros course) and Golf de Saint-Nom-La-Breteche (Red Course) near Paris will be the courses used for the 2022 championships. Le Golf National was the site of the 2018 Ryder Cup and will also play host to the Olympic Games Paris 2024, while Golf de Saint-Nom-La-Breteche hosted the prestigious Trophee Lancome for 34 years.
Maas is No. 37 in the latest World Amateur Golf Rankings (Aug. 24) and is the No. 1-ranked junior in South Africa and a member of the Golf RSA National squad. This past May, he claimed a five-shot victory (65-70-67-68=270) to win the prestigious Brabazon Trophy at Saunton Golf Club in England.
Maas posted six wins during the 2021 season, including the Cape Province Open and the South African Amateur Championship. He also was the 2020 and 2021 Silver Salver Champion. Maas recently competed in the U.S. Amateur and advanced to the Round of 64 in Match Play.
