Sarkisian Era Enters Second Season
• Texas Football Head Coach Steve Sarkisian begins his second season at the helm of the Longhorns and his ninth season as a head coach overall.
• Last season, the Texas offense ranked 18th in the nation and second in the Big 12 Conference with 35.5 points per game, the third-straight top-18 scoring output for a Sarkisan-led offense.
• The offensive showing also marked the eighth top-30 scoring offense in Sarkisian's career.
• Bijan Robinson rushed for 1,127 yards in 2021, marking the 10th consecutive year a Sarkisian coached offense has had a 1,000-yard rusher.
Heisman Hopeful: Bijan Robinson
• Texas has a strong Heisman tradition when it come to the running back position with two of the greats - Earl Campbell (1977) and Ricky Williams (1998) hailing from the Forty Acres.
• Additionally, the Longhorns have had 10 running backs or fullbacks place in the Top-10 in Heisman Trophy voting, most recently D'Onta Foreman in 2016.
• Current Big 12 Conference programs have produced five Heisman Trophy Winners from the running back/tailback position: Campbell, Williams, Billy Vessels (1952), Billy Simms (1978) and Barry Sanders (1988).
• The last three running backs named as the Heisman Trophy winner have been sophomores or juniors: Reggie Bush (2005), Mark Ingram (2009) and Derrick Henry (2015).
Robinson By The Numbers
• Bijan Robinson has a history of not only making people miss and getting the tough yards, but also breaking big plays as both a rusher and receiver. For his career, Robinson has 26 plays (19 rushes/7 receptions) of 20-plus yards and that includes six of 50 or more (all runs).
• This offseason, Robinson focused on maintaining his speed for 90 yards (instead of the 40-yard dash), and was clocked at 22.3 mph on the GPS.
• Over his last 12 games, his ratio of long plays is even more impressive. During that time, he has 21 plays (15 rushes/6 receptions) of 20-or-more yards, including four runs of 50-plus. He's accomplished that in just 245 plays (214 rushes/31 receptions) in that 12-game span, or a play of 20-plus yards on average about every 11 plays.
• In 10 games last season, he had 12 plays (9 rushes/3 receptions) of 20-or-more yards, including two of 50-plus, with five touchdowns.
• A dual threat, Robinson is one of three players in Texas history with multiple games of at least 100 rushing yards and 50 receiving yards. With three such games in his career (12/5/20 vs. Kansas State - 172/51; 9/4/21 vs. Louisiana - 137/54; 9/25/21 vs. Texas Tech - 103/73), he trails only Longhorn Legend Cedric Benson's four, while they are joined by Eric Metcalf, who had two.
• Since 2020, his three games of 100 rushing and 50 receiving yards are tops among active players who accomplished the feat in Power 5 Conferences and he is the only Power 5 Conference player to accomplish the feat multiple times during that stretch.
• The three games are also more than any other program has achieved since 2020, with Ohio State, Oklahoma and Oregon having players rush for 100 yards and have 50 yards receiving on two occasions.
• Bijan Robinson was on a roll last season, racking up yards at an astonishing rate before an elbow injury sidelined him for the final two games of the season. In 10 games, he had 1,127 yards on 195 carries (5.8 ypc) and 11 touchdowns to go along with 26 receptions for 295 yards (11.3 ypr) and four more scores. In 221 plays he had 1,422 yards for 6.4 yards per play and 15 touchdowns.
• The Tucson, Ariz. native's strong season earned him semifinalist nods for the Maxwell Award, Doak Walker Award and Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award.
• The hot first half of the season earned him nods on five midseason All-America teams, garnering accolades from the Associated Press, CBS Sports, ESPN, The Athletic and The Sporting News.
• Robinson eclipsed 1,000 rushing yards for the season in the Iowa State game to become the 13th Longhorn to surpass 1,000 yards on the ground in a season. It marked the 24th time in program history in which a Longhorn has accomplished the feat.
• Robinson finished third in the Big 12 Conference in all-purpose yards (142.20), rushing yards per game (112.7), scoring (9.0 points per game) and total touchdowns (15), fifth in rushing yards per carry (5.78), sixth third in rushing yards (1,127) and rushing touchdowns (11), and eighth in total points scored (90). His marks in rushing yards, rushing yards per game, rushing touchdowns, total touchdowns and all-purpose yards all ranked in the top-50 nationally.
• Over his last 14 games, Robinson totaled 1,649 rushing yards on 242 carries (6.8 ypc) with 15 touchdowns, while hauling in 34 receptions for 424 yards (12.5 ypr) and scoring six touchdowns. All told, he had 2,073 yards on 276 plays for 7.5 yards per play and 21 touchdowns.
• He scored 21 touchdowns (15 rushing and six receiving) in his last 11 games.
• In a 10-game stretch that began in the 2020 season against Kansas State and concluded against Baylor last season, Robinson scored a rushing or receiving touchdown in each game, equaling the longest stretch for a Longhorn since Jordan Shipley scored in 10 consecutive games in 2008. It was the longest streak for a UT running back since Cedric Benson in 2003- 04, when Benson matched Ricky Williams' UT record of 11 consecutive games in 1998-99.
