Alfred now holds top-three fastest time ever in NCAA 60m history
ALBUQUERQUE, NM. - Julien Alfred bested her own NCAA record in winning the 60m dash and Rhasidat Adeleke posted a world-leading time in the 200m as Texas Track & Field competed at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational on Saturday at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Alfred made her season debut in the 60m prelims equaling her second-fastest time ever in the event at 7.05, just .01 second off her collegiate record of 7.04 she set at the 2022 NCAA Indoor Championships. The NCAA Indoor All-American and defending NCAA Outdoor 100m and 4x100m champion broke her own record in the final improving her NCAA all-time best time clocking 7.02 seconds for the victory.
The St. Lucia native now holds the top-three fastest collegiate indoor 60m times ever and is now tied as the 20th-fastest performer in world history. On top of that, she holds the five fastest performances in UT history.
Later on the track, Adeleke made her mark as well, registering a world-leading time of 22.52 in winning the 200m dash. Saturday's time destroyed her previous indoor best of 22.85, while also breaking her outdoor personal-best of 22.59 on her way to setting a new Irish national indoor record in the event. That time also ranks as the No. 3 performer in UT history, trailing only Longhorn greats Bianca Knight (22.40) and Sanya Richards-Ross (22.49). It also stands as the fourth-best performance to date, behind only Knight (22.48) and Richards-Ross. Adeleke added a runner-up finish in the 60m dash with a time of 7.20, her second-fastest 60m effort at UT.
Keeping on the track, Marcellus Moore set a personal-best in the 200m on the men's side with his time of 20.64 to make it a clean Texas sweep of the men's and women's 200m. Moore's time puts him as the No. 2 performer in Texas history behind 10-time All-American Micaiah Harris (20.38). Junior college transfer Nolton Shelvin finished fifth with a time of 20.95, good for No. 10 on the UT all-time performer list. Last weekend Shelvin became the No. 10 performer on UT's all time 60m dash list with his time of 6.68.
The Longhorns dominated the longer runs, too, with Kennedy Simon recording the fifth-fastest performance in NCAA history in the 600m run with a winning time of 1:26.69. On the men's side, Jonathan Jones added a second-place effort in the 600m with a 1:15.72 clocking, while Yusuf Bizimana finished just behind in third with a time of 1:15.79. Both men's times rank in the NCAA top-20 all-time in the 600m run.
Sophomore Caleb Hulbin and freshman Christopher Brinkley Jr., both earned personal-bests in the 400m and top-8 finishes. Hulbin was sixth (46.99), while Brinkley ran 47.16 to finish eighth. Triple jump and long jump All-American Ackelia Smith also competed in the 400m, finishing sixth with a time of 53.85.
Field performances set the tone for the Longhorns early with sophomore Sam Hurley winning the men's high jump with a leap of 2.05m (6-8.75). For the women, Trinity Tomlinson cleared 1.75m (5-9) for the second meet in a row to finish third, just narrowly missing 1.80m. Kaeli Thompson was also just off a lifetime-best in the women's pole vault, finishing the day tied for first-place with a clearance of 4.00m (13-1.25). Kiana Lowery recorded two, top-five performances for the throws taking fifth-place in both the weight throw 17.66m (57-11) and shot put at 15.11m (49-7). Marilyn Nwora was the runner-up in shot with a heave of 16.15m (52-11.75). Stacy Brown Jr. was the triple jump runner-up with a mark of 15.72m (51-7), just .01 behind the events winner. That mark also puts him at No. 10 on the UT all-time indoor performers list.
Texas returns to competition Jan. 26-28 when All-Americans Leo Neugebauer and Kristine Blazevica travel to Lubbock for the Texas Tech Open & Multis. The distance squads will head to Boston, Mass. for the Boston Terrier Classic Jan. 27-28.
