Texas builds momentum on day two of SEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships

Texas men’s squad in sixth, women are 11th heading into the final day of the competition.
AUBURN, Ala. – No. 11/14 Texas Track & Field continued competition at the SEC Outdoor Championships on Friday at Hutsell-Rosen Track scoring in five events and advancing four athletes to Saturday finals.
The Texas men sit sixth in the team standings with 23 points, while the women are 11th with 15 points following Friday's competition.
Michael Pinones led the way in the men's shot put with a fourth-place finish after throwing 19.63m (64-5.00) to earn five points. Shaiquan Dunn added another point for Texas with an eighth-place finish at 18.34m (60-2.00).
In the men's long jump, Kelsey Daniel placed fourth with a leap of 7.82m (25-8.00), recorded on his fifth attempt, to add five more points to the team total. Mathis Vaitulukina narrowly missed the final after finishing 10th at 7.43m (24-4.50).
On the women's side, Jeanne Le Goff cleared a personal-best 1.76m (5-9.25) in the high jump to finish fourth and earn five points for the Longhorns. Caroline Peterson placed ninth after clearing 1.71m (5-7.25).
Sam Abati matched his personal best in the men's pole vault at 5.50m (18-0.50) to finish fifth and collect four points for Texas.
In the decathlon, Brock Lewis battled through injury to finish fourth overall and earn five points for the Texas men's team.
In the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase, Hudson Bennett placed sixth in 8:37.71 to earn three points for Texas. His time marked a 12-second personal best and moved him to No. 8 on the Texas all-time performer list.
On the track, Kendrick Smallwood highlighted the day for Texas in the men's 110-meter hurdles prelims, winning the opening heat in 13.19 to advance to Saturday's final. The defending SEC champion in the event recorded the second-fastest time in the field and with the third-fastest time in Texas history. Smallwood now owns the top 14 performances in program history.
Texas also advanced three athletes to Saturday's women's 1,500-meter final.
Isabel Conde de Frankenberg placed second in the opening heat in 4:15.44, the ninth-fastest performance in Texas history, while recording the third-fastest qualifying time overall.
Mia Perez added a personal-best 4:16.45 to move to No. 7 on the Texas all-time performer list with the 14th-fastest performance in school history. Perez recorded the fifth-fastest qualifying time in the prelims.
Elizabeth Pickett secured the final qualifying spot with a personal-best 4:18.33, finishing with the eighth-fastest time overall.
In the heptathlon, Tabea Eitel continued to put together solid results after falling in the opening event on Thursday. Eitel recorded the third-best long jump mark of the day at 6.04m (19-9.75) and added a personal-best javelin throw of 39.45m (129-5), the third-best mark in the field. Iana Ahetz-Etcheber finished 11th overall with 5,273 points, while Eitel placed 13th with 5,158 points.
Elsewhere in the field events, Giavonna Meeks finished 12th in the women's shot put with a throw of 15.48m (50-9.50).
Bayleigh Minor narrowly missed qualifying for the women's 400-meter final, placing 10th in 51.41, just 0.01 seconds shy of advancing while posting the fastest time among freshmen in the field. Ramiah Elliott followed in 53.57.
In the men's 400-meter prelims, Logan Popelka led the Longhorns in 46.09, followed by Waly Bathily in 46.86 and Sihle Mahlangu in 46.99.
Abigail Wolfe paced Texas in the women's 100-meter prelims with an 11.28, while Holly Okuku ran 11.49 and Naomi London finished in 11.62.
On the men's side, Jayden Jones clocked 10.48 in the 100-meter prelims, Xavier Butler ran 10.55 and Gabriel Remy posted a season-best 10.56.
Aishling Callanan recorded a time of 10:50.09 in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Competition at the SEC Outdoor Championships concludes Saturday, May 16, with Le Goff opening the day for Texas in the women's triple jump at 3 p.m. CT. The men will begin at 4:15 p.m. CT with Dunn and David Jarolimek in the discus and Osawese Agbonkonkon in the high jump.
