Holly Ward joins Trinity Byars, Lexi Missimo in earning the league’s top weekly offensive honor
AUSTIN, Texas – As a result of being the offensive sparkplug in Texas' two-goal victory over TCU on Monday evening, Holly Ward has been named the Big 12 Conference's Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced Wednesday morning.
Ward joins Trinity Byars and Lexi Missimo, who picked up the honor twice and four times, respectively, this season, as the only Longhorn women's soccer student-athletes to earn the league's top weekly offensive honor.
In Texas' 4-2 win over TCU, which was receiving votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll at the time of the match, Ward recorded her first career brace to spark the Longhorns' second-half rally to beat the Horned Frogs. Ward's goals helped make up two of the three unanswered second-half goals for the Longhorns.
Ward's two goals and four points on the week were the most by a Big 12 women's soccer student-athlete against an opponent that made the Big 12's postseason tournament. As a result of Ward's offensive production, Texas was able to finish the week with a plus-two goal scoring margin, the highest among any Big 12 program. Ward's two goals were the most by any student-athlete in the league with four-or-fewer total shots on the week.
Of the 10 weeks the league gave a weekly offensive award, Texas has picked up the top offensive honor on seven different occasions, including the last four straight weeks. In total, Ward is the sixth different Longhorn women's soccer student-athlete to earn a Big 12 weekly honor, joining Byars (Offensive), Missimo (Offensive), Lauren Lapomarda (Defensive), Mia Justus (Goalkeeper) and Avery Clark (Freshman).
