No. 5/1 TF concludes day one of Big 12 Indoor Championships

LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 5/1 Texas track and field program finished the first day of the Big 12 Indoor Championships with four runner-up individual performances. After five scored events, the men scored 39 points and sit in second, while the women are sixth with 11 points.
Freshman Jeremiah Nubbe started the scoring with a runner-up finish in the weight throw with a personal-best throw of 21.72m (71-3.25) to score eight points. Nubbe set two PRs in the event and used his fifth throw to earn the silver medal and improve his No. 3 performer mark in UT history.
Sophomore Solomon Washington also used his fifth attempt in the long jump to win silver with a mark of 7.66m (25-1.75) and added eight points to the team score. Junior Leo Neugebauer finished fourth with a mark of 7.59m (24-11) and added five points.
Junior Haftu Knight closed out the individual running events with a second-place finish in the 5K with his time of 14:18.75, while sophomore Isaac Alonzo finished fourth with a time of 14:19.9.
Both DMR teams ended the scoring for the first night after the men finished fourth with a time of 9:51.19, while the women crossed the line in fifth with their time of 11:39.11.
Senior Isabel Hebner added three points to the women's score with her sixth-place finish in the 5K with a time of 16:33.55.
Emelia Chatfield was the first to qualify on the track after finishing with the fourth-fastest time in the 60m hurdles with a season-best time of 8.27. On the men's side, freshman Kendrick Smallwood ran a personal-best 7.84 to qualify for his first conference final.
Julien Alfred did Julien Alfred things and ran the third-fastest time in collegiate history in the 60m prelims with her time of 7.03. The time is the third-fastest time in school history, set a meeting record and a facility record on her way to the 60m final. Graduate transfer Ezinne Abba also recorded a personal-best with a time of 7.19, the fourth-fastest time in prelims. Sophomore Kevona Davis (7.25) and senior Lanae-Tava Thomas (7.30) also reached Saturday's finals.
Marcellus Moore ran the second-fastest 60m prelim time at 6.58, while Nolton Shelvin clocked in with a personal-best time of 6.62 to secure a spot in the final.
It was all Texas in the 200 prelims with four women qualifying for the final and running sub-23 seconds. Davis ran the fastest time on the day at 22.73, Thomas in third at 22.83, Alfed in fourth at 22.91 and Abba in fifth at 22.99. Moore and Nolton both qualified for their second final in the 200 with times of 20.54 and 20.90, respectively.
Texas dominated the 600 yard after Rachel Helbling and Yusuf Bizimana both ran the fastest qualifying times on Friday. Helbling finished at 1:19.74, becoming the No. 9 performer in Texas history, while Bizimana finished at 1:09.51.
The Longhorns later qualified two women and one male in the 400m. Kennedy Simon and Rhasidat Adeleke ran the fastest times for the women with Simon finishing at 51.80, while Adeleke won heat 2 with her time of 52.17. Brian Herron was the lone male to qualify for the final with his time of 46.27 after his first race in over a month.
Valery Tobias, Amity Ebarb and Cruz Gomez all qualified for the 1000m final. Tobias had the third-fastest time at 2:48.77, Ebarb finished with a time of 2:49.55, while Gomez earned the final spot in the final with a time of 2:23.37. Crayton Carrozza ran the fastest 800 qualifying time at 1:48.72, while Brooke Jaworski on the women's team finished fourth at 2:07.72.
Kiana Lowery finished her indoor season with a season-best throw of 18.49m (60-8) and ninth overall in the women's weight.
