Texas looks to even season series with Texas State with Wednesday’s matchup in San Marcos
AUSTIN, TX – The University of Texas' softball program will conclude its season-long seven-game road stretch on Wednesday, April 12, when the Longhorns travel to San Marcos to play Texas State at 6 PM CT.
Brant Freeman and Cat Osterman will be in the television booth for the game's broadcast that will be streamed on ESPN+. Andrew Haynes will call the game's action on the airwaves, too, as the contest can be heard on 105.3 FM in Austin.
Texas will be looking for consecutive wins at Bobcat Softball Stadium for the first time in the last six trips down I-35. The Longhorns, which won last season's matchup in San Marcos 4-2 on March 23, has not won back-to-back road games in the series history since March 30, 2011 (6-2) and April 3, 2015 (10-2 in five innings). However, Texas does hold a 14-5 all-time record against Texas State in true road games.
The two teams met earlier this season on Sunday, March 12, when the Bobcats escaped Red & Charline McCombs Field with a 5-4 victory in nine innings to cap the weekend's Bevo Classic.
LEADING OFF
- Viviana Martinez will enter Wednesday evening's game at Texas State as one of just three Division I freshman softball student-athletes with at least 40 RBI on the season.
- Martinez (40) is also joined by Indiana's Taryn Kern (49) and UCLA's Megan Grant (42) on the list.
- UCLA's Jordan Woolery (39) and Texas' Leighann Goode (35) are one and five RBI, respectively, from accomplishing the feat, too.
- Martinez (40) is also joined by Indiana's Taryn Kern (49) and UCLA's Megan Grant (42) on the list.
- With her double in last Saturday's series finale at Iowa State, Texas freshman Leighann Goode was credited with her 14th double on the season, which placed the San Antonio native into a 10-way tie for eighth on the program's single-season doubles list.
- If Texas' offense scores at least one run against the Texas State pitching staff on Wednesday, April 12, the Longhorns will extend its active streak of consecutive games scoring at least one run in a single season to 43, one shy of tying the program record of 44 set from Feb. 6 to April 18, 2014.
- Texas will travel to San Marcos on Wednesday with a .342 team batting average, which is currently tied for the program's best single-season team batting average set by the 2021 squad.
- The Longhorns' team batting average (.342) is good enough for third in the Big 12 Conference behind Oklahoma (.380) and Oklahoma State (.345).
- With their next hit, the Texas offense will record its 400th hit on the season, becoming the first team in the Big 12 to reach the plateau at this point in the 2023 season.
- Currently, the Longhorns have been credited with 399 hits in 1,167 official plate appearances throughout 42 games on the season.
- Entering Wednesday evening's softball contest, only six Big 12 softball student-athletes have been credited with 50-or-more hits on the season. Of those six, three are Texas Longhorns: Leighann Goode (57), Mia Scott (53), Viviana Martinez (51).
- Goode's 57 hits are leading the conference, while Scott is tied with Texas Tech's Makinzy Herzog for the second most. Martinez' hit total is good enough for fifth most in the league.
- Texas is the only Division I softball program to feature multiple freshmen student-athletes with 50-or-more hits so far this season with Leighann Goode (57) and Viviana Martinez (51).
- Wednesday's game will mark the second consecutive season that Texas has faced an opponent with a tie in its overall record.
- Last season, Texas, then 31-12-1, played Houston, then 23-19-1, in Austin on April 20, 2022.
- The Longhorns won the game, 6-4, to move to 32-12-1, while the Cougars dropped to 23-20-1.
