For the second consecutive FIFA Women’s World Cup, former Texas Longhorn Julia Grosso earns a spot on the Canadian Women’s National Team
AUSTIN, TX – The former Big 12 Conference Co-Freshman of the Year and United Soccer Coaches All-American, Julia Grosso has been selected to the Canadian Women's National Team (CANWNT) roster for the upcoming 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup Australia/New Zealand, the Canada Soccer organization announced Sunday. It will mark the second consecutive FIFA Women's World Cup opportunity (2019) for Grosso.
Grosso, who received her first call-up to the senior team on Nov. 9, 2017, against the United States, will enter this month's FIFA Women's World Cup with 50 career caps for the CANWNT with 20 starts, three goals and three assists.
On July 8, 2022, Grosso scored in the 64' minute of Canada's 1-0 victory over Panama at the CONCACAF Women's Championship to qualify the CANWNT for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup. This came just three days after scoring two goals off the bench in Canada's 6-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago.
A Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada native, Grosso helped the CANWNT to its first-ever gold medal after connecting on the decisive penalty kick in the sixth round of a penalty shootout to beat Sweden, 3-2, in penalty kicks in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. At the Tokyo Olympics, Grosso earned five caps for Canada for matches against Great Britain, Chile, Brazil, United States and Sweden.
Canada will kick off the first of three group stage days by playing fellow Group B member Nigeria at 9:30 PM CT on Thursday, July 20. The Republic of Ireland and Australia, one of two host countries for the tournament, round out Group B.
The 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup will be the first to feature an expanded format of 32 teams from 24, replicating a similar format from the FIFA Men's World Cup from 1998 to 20222. It will also be the first FIFA Women's World Cup to have multiple host nations (Australia and New Zealand) as well as the first senior World Cup to be held across multiple confederations as Australia is in the Asian Confederation and New Zealand is in the Oceanian Confederation.
Grosso, a 5-foot-7 midfielder, currently plays for the Italian club Juventus in the Serie A, where she was named the midfielder of the year after appearing in 20 games and scoring three goals in her second season with the team. On June 4, 2023, Juventus won its second consecutive Coppa Italia after knocking off Roma with a 90+3' goal.
Grosso, in four seasons on the Forty Acres, totaled nearly 5,071 career minutes played throughout 60 career caps for the Longhorns from 2018-21. She totaled 21 goals and 16 assists for 58 career points en route to being a three-time all-conference performer.
