Hernandez advances to 1-meter final at World Aquatics Championships

Hailey Hernandez placed 10th in the 1-meter springboard preliminary round.
FUKUOKA, Japan – Texas Women's Diving's Hailey Hernandez qualified for the 1-meter springboard final at the World Aquatics Championships on Friday morning at the Fukuoka Prefectural Pool.
Representing the United States, Hernandez scored 239.40 to place 10th in the 1-meter preliminary round, 51.85 points behind the leader, Lin Shan (291.25 points) of China. Shan's teammate Li Yajie (283.35) closed out the round in second, while Mexico's Aranza Vázquez (262.20) was third. Sitting in 15th place after the second round, Hernandez climbed to ninth after scoring 48.30 points with a back 1 ½ pike in the third round. She followed that with 46.80 points on a reverse 1 ½ pike and then 50.70 points on a front 1 ½ with two twists to clinch a spot in the final.
Incoming Longhorn Carolina Kupka of Norway scored 217.00 points to place 29th in the prelim stage, while Texas Ex Paola Pineda, diving for Mexico, tallied 214.24 points to finish the prelims in 31st place.
Pineda will next dive in the synchronized 3-meter with partner Arantxa Chávez on Sunday, July 16 and Kupka will compete on the 3-meter, which gets underway on Wednesday, July 19, and
Hernandez will dive in the 1-meter final on Saturday, July 15 at 1:30 a.m. CT. The final will be broadcast live on Peacock.
