Longhorn trio earn 4x200m free relay silver at World Aquatics Championships

Luke Hobson and Carson Foster joined Jake Mitchell and Kieran Smith in the final for Team USA, while Drew Kibler earned silver after competing in the preliminary round.
FUKUOKA, Japan – Texas Swimming's Luke Hobson, Carson Foster and Drew Kibler won silver for the United States in the men's 4x200-meter freestyle relay at the World Aquatics Championships on Friday at the Marine Messe Fukuoka. Caspar Corbeau added a fifth-place finish in the men's 200-meter breaststroke, while Jillian Cox qualified for the final in the women's 800-meter freestyle.
Hobson and Foster were joined in the 4x200m free relay final by Jake Mitchell and Kieran Smith, winning silver in 7:00.02. Great Britain won gold in 6:59.08 and Australia collected bronze in 7:02.13.
Hobson led off the relay for the United States with a time of 1:46.00 before giving way to Foster, who moved the Americans from fourth to second with a split of 1:44.49. The U.S. was solidly in second throughout the remainder of the race, with Mitchell splitting 1:45.06 and Smith anchoring in 1:44.47. The Americans time of 7:00.02 bested their 2022 gold-medal swim of 7:00.24.
Kibler earned a silver medal after competing in the event's preliminary round, helping the United States to the second-fastest time of 7:06.07 in the heats, leading off in 1:46.44.
In the men's 200m breast, Corbeau took fifth for the Netherlands with a personal-best swim of 2:08.42. The fifth-place result improved upon his seventh-place finish at last year's championships.
Cox, competing for the U.S., qualified for the women's 800m free final with a swim of 8:22.20. The final will take place on Saturday, July 29 at 7:23 a.m. CT.
Swimming at the World Aquatics Championships continues Friday evening at 8:30 p.m. CT. The session will feature preliminary heats for the women's 50-meter breaststroke, men's 50-meter backstroke and 1500-meter freestyle, men's and women's 50-meter freestyle and the mixed 4x100-meter freestyle relay.
Texas will be represented by Lydia Jacoby (USA) and Anna Elendt (Germany) in the 50m breast, with Jacoby racing in heat five at 9:18 p.m. CT and Elendt in heat 6 at 9:20 p.m. CT. The preliminary rounds and finals are broadcast live on Peacock.
