A first-ever meeting awaits the Texas Longhorns on Sunday
AUSTIN, Texas – For the first time in program history, The University of Texas women's soccer program will take the pitch for a soccer match against the Iona Gaels when the two teams meet at Mike A. Myers Stadium at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 27.
The match will be available to watch on the Longhorn Network and stream on the ESPN app with a valid television subscription.
KICKING OFF
- When Texas and Iona kick off to begin Sunday evening's contest, it'll mark the first time the Longhorns have played a women's soccer program from the state of New York since Nov. 10, 2006, when UT played Long Island University.
- Texas and Long Island played in Storrs, Conn., in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, when the Longhorns knocked off the Sharks, 4-0, en route to concluding the season ranked eighth in the country.
- Entering Sunday evening's match, Texas has not lost back-to-back matches since Nov. 7, 2021 against then-No. 9 TCU (2-1) and Nov. 14, 2021 against then-No. 25 SMU.
- The Longhorns have not lost back-to-back regular season matches since Sept. 11, 2020 against Kansas (1-0) and Sept. 18, 2020 (3-0).
- Iona will become the 139th different opponent for the Texas women's soccer program since the Longhorns' first season in 1994.
- The Gaels will also become the fourth different opponent that starts with the letter "I" for the Longhorns, joining Illinois (faced one time, 2006), Illinois State (faced one time, 2013) and Iowa State (faced 30 times, most recently 2022).
- Midfielder Lexi Missimo and goalkeeper Mia Justus enter Sunday night's contest as the only two Longhorn women's soccer student-athletes to have played every minute (270) of Texas' three regular-season matches so far this season.
- With 57 minutes played against the Gaels, Missimo, a junior from Southlake, Texas, will surpass 4,000 career minutes played as a Longhorn.
- If Lexi Missimo is credited with an assist against Iona on Sunday, she will become the first student-athlete in program history to have multiple streaks of four consecutive matches with an assist:
4 Consecutive Matches with an Assist
- Lexi Missimo, Oct. 20 – 30, 2022
- Alexa Adams, Oct. 16 – 30, 2015
- Hannah Higgins, Aug. 22 – Sept. 2, 2011
- Kylee Wosnuck, Aug. 31 – Sept. 10, 2000
- Lexi Missimo, who already holds the top two spots, is already just five assists shy of tying ninth place on the program's single-season assist leaderboard just three matches into the new season.
- She has been credited with at least one assist in eight of her last 10 matches, dating back to the Longhorns' win over Iowa State on Oct. 20, 2022.
- Her single-match career high is four, set back on Sept. 26, 2021 against Oklahoma when Missimo was a true freshman.
