Neugebauer finishes fifth in decathlon at the World Championships

Alfred reaches second final and finished fourth
BUDAPEST – Leo Neugebauer and Julien Alfred's historic season came to end, finishing in the top-five of their respective events at the 2023 World Athletic Championships.
Neugebauer finished fifth in the men's decathlon after finishing as the 2023 NCAA Decathlon champion with a then-world leading mark of 8,836 points. Neugebauer represented Germany and finished fourth with 8,645 points – the second-best score in Texas history. He now owns the three top scores in program history.
After the first five events, Neugebauer had the second-best score in decathlon history with 4,640 points from day one. He began his competition by scoring 931 points in the 100-meter dash with his time of 10.69.
He proceeded to pop a jump of eight meters in the long jump for the best jump of the competition and scored over a thousand points with 1,061. The jump moved him up to the No. 5 performer in Texas history behind Longhorn greats Eric Metcalf, Marquise Goodwin, Steffin McCarter and Richard Duncan.

He continued his historic day by throwing a personal-best heave of 17.04m in the shot put for 916 points. After the three events, Leo led the group with 2,908 points. He became the first athlete in history to long jump 8.00m or farther and throw the shot put 17.00m or farther during the same competition.
Neugebauer later cleared 2.02m in the high jump, just .02 off from his season best set at NCAAs and ended the night running the 400-meter dash in 47.99 seconds. His 4,640 points was one for the books. He returned to the track Saturday morning and ran the 110-meter hurdles in 14.75 seconds for 880 points.
He garnered 821 points from the discus throw with his throw of 47.73m. He went into the pole vault in fourth-place with 6,341 points and jumped two positions after clearing 5.10m for 941 points.
The six-time All-American threw just over his personal best in the javelin at 57.95m and ran a season-best time of 4:43.93 in the 1500m to conclude his competition and finish fifth.

Alfred reached her second final of the competition in the 200-meter dash. The NCAA indoor and outdoor 200m champion previously finished fifth in the 100-meter final with her time of 10.93. On Friday night, she finished fourth in the 200m final behind Shericka Jackson of Jamaica, Gabby Thomas and Sha'Carri Richardson of USA with a time of 22.05.
