AUSTIN, Texas — Incoming freshman Lauren Kim continued her strong summer as she won the 109thCanadian Women's Amateur Championship on Friday at Ashburn Golf Club in Halifax N.S.
Kim held second place during the first three rounds of the championship and entered Friday's final round two-strokes behind Brooke Rivers of Brampton, Ont. Kim recorded five birdies on Friday to finish with rounds of 67, 69, 73, 71 to edge out Rivers by one-stroke to win the national championship.
"I just needed to take down one stroke at a time, its hard to stay focused sometimes with the wind out there but I'm glad I came in strong for the last hole," said Kim. "It's crazy because I haven't won in a few years and to do it on homeland, and one of the biggest championships in Canada, it's unreal."
With the win comes an exemption into the 2023 CPKC Women's Open at Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club in Vancouver, B.C., from August 22-27 and the 2023 U.S. Women's Amateur Championship at Bel-Air Country Club, Calif., from August 7-13.
Kim, a native of Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, was the Pacific Northwest Golf Association Player of the Year in 2022 and is ranked No. 96 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. Kim took third-place at the Canadian Women's Amateur Championship, second-place at the Canadian Summer Games and second-place at the NextGen Pacific Championship. Kim is ranked No. 55 in the American Junior Golf Association and No. 30 on the Junior Golf Scoreboard. She placed ninth at the World Junior Girls Championship. In the summer of 2021, Kim won three AJGA events and set three tournament records for lowest overall score. At the age of 12 Kim was the youngest to make the cut at the 2018 Canadian Women's Amateur Championship and at the age of 13 qualified for the U.S. Women's Amateur.
