No. 16 Soccer doubles down on weekly awards for second straight week
09.13.2023 | Soccer
Texas has now earned at least one Big 12 weekly award in three of four weeks.
AUSTIN, Texas – For the second consecutive week, The University of Texas women's soccer program earned two Big 12 Conference weekly honors as Lexi Missimo (Offensive) and Mia Justus (Goalkeeper) continued the trend when the league announced the selections Wednesday morning.
Lexi Missimo becomes the first women's soccer student-athlete in the conference to pick up the league's weekly top offensive honor in consecutive weeks and joins BYU's Kendell Petersen (Defensive) as the only student-athletes to be selected as a player of the week on multiple occasions this season. Mia Justus becomes the fourth different student-athlete around the conference to be selected as the league's top goalkeeper for the week.
Justus is just the second goalkeeper in program history to be selected as the Big 12 Goalkeeper of the Week, joining Savannah Madden, who picked up the honor six different times from 2020 to 2022. Missimo is the first Longhorn to be named the Big 12's Offensive Player of the Week in consecutive weeks since Trinity Byars accomplished the feat on Sept. 20 and Sept. 27, 2022.
In 164 minutes played across two matches on the week, Missimo was the only women's soccer student-athlete in the Big 12 to finish the week with 10-or-more points (10), marking the second consecutive week the junior midfielder from Southlake has recorded double-digit points in a single week. She opened the week with a program-tying 10-point performance after recording a hat trick — her second on the season — to go along with a program-tying four assists in Texas' 7-0 win over Stephen F. Austin. She scored or assisted on all seven Longhorn goals against the Lumberjacks. Her four assists on the week were double the amount of the next closest student-athlete in the Big 12.
Justus was the only Texas women's soccer student-athlete to play all 180 minutes across the Longhorns' two wins on the week. In the two matches, Justus made 11 saves for a perfect 1.000 save percentage to record two clean sheets on the week. She was the only student-athlete in the Big 12 to record two shutouts on the week, while her saves (11), saves per game (5.50), save percentage (1.000) and goals against average (0.00) were all tied for the conference lead. Her week was highlighted by a 90-minute shutout of the then-No. 3 scoring offense in then-No. 23 Gonzaga on Sunday as the Ohio native went for a career-high nine saves.
