The Longhorns have swept the Big 12 awards five times this season.
IRVING, Texas – No. 9 Texas Men's Swimming & Diving earned a sweep of the weekly Big 12 Conference awards, the league office announced on Wednesday. Jake Foster was named the Swimmer of the Week, Nick Harris collected Diver of the Week honors and Nate Germonprez was tabbed the Newcomer of the Week. Texas has swept the awards five times this season.
Foster, in his first collegiate competition of the season, won the 100 breast at No. 3 NC State with an nation-leading and B-cut time of 51.22, then shortly after placed third in the 200 IM in 1:45.46 for another B-cut. The Cincinnati, Ohio native also helped Texas to a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:24.41, splitting 23.11 during the breaststroke leg. Foster won the 200 breast at Duke the following day in 1:53.05, the 12th-best time in the nation this season, for his third B-cut of the weekend. Foster earned the second conference swimmer of the week accolade of his career.
Harris collected a pair of victories and four top-three results over the weekend in North Carolina. He won the 1-meter competitions at No. 3 NC State and at Duke, scoring 393.53 points against the Wolfpack and 367.65 versus the Blue Devils. The Chester Springs Pa. native also grabbed second on 3-meter at NC State with 414.98 points, 0.75 points shy of the victory, and third on 3-meter at Duke with 402.15 points. Harris has been named the diver of the week four times this season and eight times in his career.
Germonprez won one event and had a pair of individual top-two performances in North Carolina. He earned a second-place result in the 200 IM at No. 3 NC State with a swim of 1:44.40. He also helped Texas to a pair of top-three relay results, taking second in the 200 medley relay (1:24.41) and third in the 400 free relay (2:52.48). At Duke the following morning, he won the 200 free with a season-best and B-cut 1:34.98, then split 19.85 in the 200 free relay to help UT to a second-place finish (1:19.79). Germonprez earned his second newcomer of the week honor of the season and his third overall weekly award.
Texas returns to action this weekend in what will be legendary head coach Eddie Reese's final home meets. The Horns kick things off on Friday, Feb. 2 against TCU on Senior Day. Diving will begin at 2:15 p.m. CT and at 4 p.m. the swimmers will race on the long course with senior day festivities slated to get underway at 3:40 p.m. CT. On Saturday, Feb. 3, Texas will compete in The Sterkel Classic with competition beginning at noon.
