Texas avenges 2023 defeat to LSU, beats Tigers for fourth time in six all-time meetings
BATON ROUGE, La. – And now there is no one in the history of The University of Texas women's soccer program that has scored more goals over the course of a career than Lexi Missimo following the Longhorns' 3-1 victory at LSU on Sunday.
Heading into Texas' first match at LSU Soccer Stadium since 2006, Missimo was tied with teammate Trinity Byars for the most career goals (52) for a student-athlete in program history. And the senior midfielder from Southlake, Texas nearly set the new mark less than 12 minutes into Sunday's contest.
As several of her teammates were drawing the attention of multiple LSU defenders inside the 18-yard box, Missimo attempted a shot from the edge of the 6-yard box that was blocked. Five minutes later, Missimo, again, appeared to have moved her name to the top of the record book with an uncontested shot on goal. But the right-footed strike hit the right woodwork and bounced away from Missmo.
Missimo had one last opportunity to accomplish the feat during the first off as she took a shot at the 30-minute mark, but the ball was off the mark.
After LSU goalkeeper Audur Scheving saved a Missimo shot six minutes into the second half, the senior made sure her next attempt found the back of the net as she beat Scheving in a 1-on-1 opportunity to extend Texas' lead to 3-0 just 11 minutes into the second.
The goal was not only Missimo's ninth on the season — tied for the second most scored in a single history during her collegiate career — but moved her closed to the 60-goal, 60-assist club as she'll enter Texas' next match with 53 career goals and 59 career assists.
FROM HEAD COACH ANGELA KELLY
"Oh, there was a lot of resilience out there today. As I mentioned to the team after the match, it's all about grind, gritting and resiliency, those would be the three words. Through adversity, we've had to find those characteristics within ourselves. Every great team has all of those qualities, but we've had to have them come to the forefront now. It's something that's not been a primary identity and for that all of these young ladies are growing and I'm really proud of them."
FROM SENIOR MIDFIELDER LEXI MISSIMO
"I'm just doing my job for the team, really. My job is to score goals and create assists, so I'm just doing my job. I've been in an assisting era over the last few matches, but now I'm trying to get back into the scoring era of my game. I'm just glad I can do both for this team, though. If it's an assist or scoring a goal, I'm just glad we were able to get the win, while playing my part on the team."
