Brothers, Montgomery, Shimkin and Ward highlighted for excelling on pitch, in classroom
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas women's soccer student-athletes Arianna Brothers, Carly Montgomery, Jilly Shimkin and Holly Ward were all selected to the College Sports Communicators' 2024 Division I Academic All-District Women's Soccer Team, the organization announced Tuesday. The honor is the first for Brothers and Montgomery, while Shimkin and Ward were both selected in 2023-24.
On the pitch, Ward (8) and Shimkin (4) have combined for 12 goals with 23 and 13 points, respectively, while starting all 22 matches for head coach Angela Kelly this season. Most recently, Ward became the first student-athlete in program history to score four goals in a single NCAA Tournament match as the senior forward accomplished the feat against Boston University just four days ago. Shimkin was credited with an assist on one of Ward's four goals, which moved the New York native into sole possession of fifth on the program's career assist list.
Montgomery and Brothers, both sophomores, have stepped up in pivotal roles for the Longhorns during the program's postseason success. Montgomery, a defender, scored the match-winning goal on a Lexi Missimo corner during the 80th minute of Texas' 1-0 win over South Carolina to win the 2024 SEC Soccer Tournament. Since Texas' match against Oklahoma on Oct. 10, Brothers has played 67-or-more minutes at a midfield position nine times, a mark that also included playing every position minute of a match on eight different occasions. The Longhorns are 8-1 during that nine-match stretch.
The 2024-25 Academic All-District Women's Soccer Teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America program separately recognizes honorees in four divisions – NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
Academic All-District honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America ballot. Women's First-, second and third-team Academic All-America honorees will be announced on Dec. 11.
In order to be eligibility for nomination, student-athletes must compete in 90 percent of the institution's matches or must start in at least 66 percent of the matches. Additionally, each student-athlete must have at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (GPA).
