Maurer breaks 500 free American Record at Texas Invitational

Longhorns win four of five final events on opening night of three-day meet.
AUSTIN, Texas – Sophomore Rex Maurer broke Carson Foster's hour-old 500 free American Record by over a second on the first night of the Texas Invitational.
Maurer, the Stanford transfer, won the 500 free in record-breaking fashion with his time of 4:04.45 to meet the NCAA-A cut. It was the second American Record in the 500 free at the Texas Swim Center on Wednesday after Texas Ex and USA Olympic silver medalist Foster swam it in 4:05.81 to start the night. The record was previously held by Keiran Smith of Florida and was set in 2020.
Daivd Johnston (4:09.41), Coby Carrozza (4:11.54) and Luke Hobson (4:12.92) helped UT finish in the top four positions in the 500 free.
The men won its first relay of the night in the 200 free relay after freshman Garrett Gould, sophomore Camden Taylor, junior Aleksej Filipovic and freshman Kyle Peck finished in 1:16.73, earning a B-cut time.
Sophomore Will Modglin won the 200 IM with a time of 1:40.97 to lead the Longhorns in the top three finishes. Junior Hubert Kos was the runner-up with a time of 1:41.17 and Ben Sampson was third in 1:42.43.
Gould added a runner-up finish in the 50 free with his time of 19.51 with Taylor finishing five in 19.54 and Filipovic seventh in 19.88.
Modglin, Nate Germonprez, Kos and Hobson combined to win the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:02.18, another A-cut time. The time is the eighth-fastest time in school history.
