Reese Atwood earns second career Big 12 honor, first UT non-pitcher to earn NFCA’s top weekly honor since 2016.
AUSTIN, Texas – Following a trip to the West Coast, Reese Atwood has been named both the Big 12 Conference and NFCA Player of the Week after posting video game-like statistics throughout No. 3/3 Texas' five wins last weekend.
The weekly conference honor is the second for Atwood during her young softball career on the Forty Acres after being selected on April 25, 2023. She also became just the second non-pitcher student-athlete in program history to be selected as the NFCA National Player of the Week, joining outfielder Lindsey Stephens, who was the last UT non-pitcher to win the honor on May 10, 2016.
Throughout Texas' five games in California over the weekend, Atwood slashed .733/.632/1.467 in 15 official trips to the plate. She finished the week by leading the Big 12 in hits (11), RBIs (12), total bases (22) and slugging percentage (1.467), while being tied for first in home runs (3) and runs scored (7). She recorded three-hit contests in both of Texas' games against San Diego last weekend, while hitting her first home run on the season in a nationally-televised game against then-No. 10/8 UCLA on Friday night.
The day after helping the Longhorns earn their first two wins on the season, Atwood returned to the dish to record her first career multi-home run game when she connected for two against San Diego on Saturday, Feb. 10.
By the end of the weekend, Atwood was credited with at least one hit, run scored and RBI in all five of Texas' games in California.
