Will Modglin, Nick Harris and Will Scholtz earned weekly Big 12 Conference accolades.
IRVING, Texas – No. 9 Texas Men's Swimming & Diving collected three Big 12 Conference weekly awards, the league announced on Wednesday. Will Modglin earned Swimmer of the Week honors and Nick Harris was named the Diver of the Week, while Will Scholtz earned a share of the Newcomer of the Week accolades following standout performances in a 162-137 win at SMU last week.
Modglin, a freshman from Zionsville, Ind., collected two individual wins and helped Texas to a pair of relay victories at SMU. He swept the backstroke events, winning the 100 back in 45.67 before claiming the 200 back victory in 1:42.82. Modglin helped Texas open the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay, splitting 21.07 in the backstroke during the Longhorns' 1:24.39 swim. Texas closed out the meet with a win in the 200 free relay, recording a time of 1:17.50 with Modglin splitting 19.73 in the lead leg. Modglin has earned swimmer of the week honors three times this season and has collected conference honors overall.
Harris, a Chester Springs, Pa. native, tallied two top-two results at SMU, highlighted by a victory on 1-meter on which he scored a season-high 400.13 points to win by over 33 points. The sophomore followed that with a runner-up finish on 3-meter with 383.48 points, fewer than three points shy of the winner. Harris has earned the honor five times this season and nine times during his career.
Scholtz, who hails from Louisville, Ky, swept the breaststroke events at SMU and helped Texas to a victory in the 200 medley relay. He swam 52.96 to win the 100 breast, almost a second ahead of the runner-up, then followed that with a victory in the 200 breast with a swim of 1:57.03. The freshman helped Texas open the day with a victory in the 200 medley relay, splitting 23.37 in the breast in the Longhorns' 1:24.39 result. It is the second newcomer of the week honor for Scholtz.
The Longhorns next compete at the Big 12 Conference Championship to be held Feb. 27-Mar. 2 in Morgantown, W.Va.
