Texas opens Lone Star State Invitational with back-to-back shutouts
AUSTIN, Texas – The pitching mastermind who is Mike White was up to his old tricks on Friday, when three of his pitchers combined to toss 14 consecutive scoreless innings as Texas beat RV/RV Louisiana, 5-0, and Colorado State, 7-0, on the opening day of the Lone Star State Invitational.
It's the first time this season — and first time since blanking Abilene Christian (8-0) and Texas Southern (22-0) on Saturday, Feb. 25 and Sunday, Feb. 26, respectively — that the Texas Longhorn pitching staff has tossed shutouts in back-to-back contests. As a result of Friday's productivity in the circle, UT's team earned run average (ERA) has dropped to 0.80 in 61.0 innings played so far this season. The staff is also limiting opponents to just a .155 batting average (34 hits in 220 plate appearances).
To begin Friday's action for the Longhorns, freshman right-hander Teagan Kavan (4-0) tossed her first career seven-inning complete game shutout in Texas' five-run victory over the Ragin' Cajuns. In a game that lasted just an hour and 31 minutes, Kavan threw 66 pitches to 23 different batters and surrendered just two hits while striking out six and not issuing a free pass or hitting a batter. She will enter her next start having retired a career-high 11 consecutive batters.
In the night cap, Mac Morgan (2-0) combined with Sophia Simpson to throw a seven-inning shutout as the Missouri native tossed the first five frames and struck out three while not walking a batter, before giving way to Simpson who fanned three Ram batters, too, and did not surrender a hit.
FROM HEAD COACH MIKE WHITE
"I saw a lot of good pitching today. Teagan Kavan did a great job out there and then Mac Morgan got a lot of ground balls. I thought we did what we had to do in a lot of different situations. Offensively, I thought we were sleeping a little bit, but we had some spurts where we did really well. There's always something to take away from every game, though, so we'll look back and these two and keep learning and moving forward."
FROM SOPHOMORE CATCHER REESE ATWOOD
"I am really just trying to be relaxed at the plate right now and trusting my teammates around me. That really just helps take the pressure off."
GAME NOTES
- Against Colorado State, Reese Atwood continued her blistering hot start at the dish as the sophomore catcher turned in her second multi-home run game in 2024 after hitting a two-run shot in the bottom of the first before following it up with a solo home run two innings later.
- Victoria Hunter also found offensive success against the Rams as the freshman drove in a career-high three runs on a bases-clearing double in the bottom of the fourth to extend Texas' lead from 4-0 to 7-0.
- For the first time this season, Mia Scott was credited with a three-hit contest when the junior tripled in the bottom of the first, singled in the bottom the third and singled, again, in the bottom of the sixth against Louisiana.
- Texas scored in the bottom of the first in both games on Friday, pushing its record in 2024 to 8-0 when scoring in the game's first inning.
UP NEXT
- Texas (10-0) will look to inch closer towards an insertion into the "top 10 longest winning streaks" section of the program's record book when the Longhorns take on Colorado State (4:30 p.m./LHN) and No. 13/12 Stanford (7 p.m./LHN) on Saturday, Feb. 24.
- Wins over both the Rams and Cardinal would push Texas' current winning streak to 12, one shy of tying for the ninth-longest winning streak in program history.
