No. 10 Men’s Tennis sweeps No. 55 St. John’s, 7-0

The Longhorns defeated the Red Storm, 7-0, securing their fifth sweep of the season.
Austin – No. 10 Texas Men's Tennis (9-2) claimed a 7-0 victory against No. 55 St. John's (10-3) on Wednesday afternoon at the Texas Tennis Center.
After taking the doubles point with 6-0 sweeps at Nos. 2 and 3, the Longhorns captured all six singles matches in straight sets with wins from junior No. 95 Pierre-Yves Bailly at No. 4, senior No. 2 Micah Braswell at No. 2, senior No. 1 Eliot Spizzirri at No. 1 for the clinch, freshman Lucas Brown at No. 6, freshman Gilles-Arnaud Bailly at No. 3, and sophomore No. 48 Jonah Braswell at No. 5.
The Longhorns limited the Red Storm to winning just 15 combined games across the eight completed singles and doubles matches, while St. John's only secured three games in one of the 14 total sets of those. The Red Storm was also held to either zero or one game in 10 of the sets.
In doubles, the tandem of senior Eshan Talluri and Pierre-Yves Bailly finished first by taking down Leon Petko and Ignacio Vinas, 6-0, at No. 2. The Texas duo broke the match's only game decided by deuce point in the fourth game.
At No. 3, Micah Braswell and Gilles-Arnaud Bailly secured the doubles point with another 6-0 win with theirs coming against Adam Groves and Marco Cinotti. Similar to match at No. 2, the Texas tandem won the match's only game decided by deuce point in the fifth game.
The No. 6 pair of seniors Cleeve Harper and Spizzirri were leading their match, 3-2, against Francisco Bascon and Leonardo Mileikowsky at No. 1 when Texas clinched the doubles point. The match's first four games were all broken, with Bascon and Mileikowsky earning their breaks on two deuce points. At 2-2, Spizzirri and Harper held serve for 3-2 before play ended.
In singles play, Pierre-Yves Bailly was the first to finish, registering an efficient 6-1, 6-0 win over Danilo Raicevic on court 4. Raicevic broke on a deuce point in the match's first game, but it proved to be the only one Raicevic would win. Bailly went on a 12-0 run without any of the games even reaching deuce.
Micah Braswell was next off with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Carl Gustavsson at No. 2. Braswell began the match on a 3-0 run before Gustavsson held on a deuce point for 3-1. Braswell returned the favor with a deuce-point hold in the following game for 4-1, then broke for 5-1. Gustavsson managed to break back for 5-2, but Braswell matched with another break to win the first set. Braswell rode his momentum into the second set by jumping out to a 4-0 advantage. Gustavsson ended Braswell's streak with a break in the fifth game, but Braswell closed out the match by taking the next two games to give Texas a 3-0 overall advantage.
The clinching match for the Longhorns was Spizzirri's 6-3, 6-0 win over Francisco Bascon at No. 1. Bascon opened the match with deuce-point break then held serve for a 2-0 lead, but Spizzirri answered with a 5-0 run. Bascon prolonged the set with a deuce-point hold for 5-3, but Spizzirri would win the next game for the set and spark a 7-0 run to close out the match. The streak saw Spizzirri win three games decided by deuce points.
Brown gave Texas a 5-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Armando Sotelo at court 6. Brown took the first set's two games that were decided by deuce point for 2-1 and 4-1, then at 4-1 closed out the set with a hold followed by a break. The second set stayed on serve through the first five games and featured three consecutive deuce-point holds, however with Brown leading, 3-2, he proceeded to win the remaining games, capped off by a deuce-point break.
On court 3, Gilles-Arnaud Bailly took down Mileikowsky, 6-1, 6-2. Bailly gained control of the match early by opening on a 5-0 run. Mileikowsky managed a hold for 5-1, but Bailly also held to close out the set. Bailly then jumped out to a 4-1 advantage in the second set with Mileikowsky winning his lone game in the stretch at deuce. After Mileikowsky held for 4-2, Bailly closed out on a 2-0 run for a 6-2 win.
Jonah Braswell completed the sweep for the Longhorns with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Ryota Kaneda on court 5. Braswell opened the match on a 4-0 run before Kaneda managed a deuce-point break for 4-1. Braswell would break back then hold serve to take the first set. Kaneda held serve to open the second set, but from there, Braswell set out on a 6-0 run, which saw him win four deuce points in the process, to complete the 7-0 team sweep.
Up next, Texas will travel to Ft. Worth on Saturday, March 2, to face No. 2 TCU in a nonconference matchup that is set to begin at 2 p.m. CT.
