Teagan Kavan runs consecutive scoreless inning streak to 22.0 straight following Wednesday’s victory
SAN MARCOS, Texas – Entering Texas' 1-0 victory at Texas State on Wednesday night, the Longhorns' freshman right-handed pitcher Teagan Kavan had reason to celebrate as it was her birthday. But following the game, she had another reason as the Iowa native tossed her second career seven-inning complete game shutout on just 94 pitches.
Since allowing two runs in a four-inning start against then-No. 9 Stanford on Friday, Feb. 16 in Clearwater, Kavan has made five appearances totaling 19.2 innings and has allowed just six hits, walked two, struck out 17 and allowed zero runs. Dating back to the start against the Cardinal when Kavan allowed two runs in the top of the second, before throwing two scoreless frames, the freshman pitcher has now thrown 22.0 consecutive scoreless innings and has lowered her season earned run average (ERA) from 3.23 to a 1.29 following Wednesday night's action.
On Wednesday night against Texas State, Kavan limited the Bobcat offense to just two hits — both singles — while matching her career high with nine strikeouts on 94 pitches. She surrendered her first to lead off the second and did not allow another one until the bottom of the sixth. Unlike the hit in the bottom of the second, the Bobcat runner in the sixth worked her way around to third, representing the game-tying run but did not score as a groundball back to Kavan ended the frame.
FROM HEAD COACH MIKE WHITE
"I just saw really good stuff from Teagan tonight. Her velocity was good, her control was great. Every time we got in trouble tonight, she came through for the team and that's what you need in those situations. With the conditions tonight, we knew we weren't going to be able to score a lot of runs, so it was a good night to watch a great pitching matchup."
FROM FRESHMAN TEAGAN KAVAN
"I just felt good out of the bullpen. It's always a tough game against Texas State, so I knew I had to come out and bring it."
GAME NOTES
- For the fifth time in 13 games this season, Texas leadoff batter Bella Dayton drew two walks in a game.
- She also accomplished the feat against Colorado State (2/24), Stanford (2/16), UCLA (2/10, 2/9).
- With the win, Texas has now won its last three consecutive games against Texas State in San Marcos and moves 16-5 all time against the Bobcats at Bobcat Softball Stadium.
- With her double to lead off the top of the fourth inning, Katie Stewart extended her on-base streak to 12 consecutive games, which is now the longest active streak after Reese Atwood did not reach base against the Bobcats.
- Additionally, Stewart also extended her hitting streak to eight consecutive games, which is the longest active streak by a Longhorn softball student-athlete and ties Reese Atwood (8, Feb. 9 to Feb. 21) for the longest streak by a Texas batter so far this season.
- Texas scored the game's lone run in the top of the fourth when Joley Mitchell, who pinched hit for Viviana Martinez, singled a 1-2 pitch — to cap a six-pitch plate appearance — to left field to score Katie Stewart, who doubled down the right line to start the fourth and moved to third on a groundball off the bat of Reese Atwood, from third.
UP NEXT
- Next up, Texas (13-1) will host the five-team Longhorn Invitational this weekend with the Longhorns beginning play at 3 p.m. on Friday, March 1 against Northwestern State.
