Sophomore All-American and 2023 Western Amateur finalist is one of 40 players named to watch list for nation’s top collegiate men’s golfer.
FORT WORTH, Texas — University of Texas Men's Golf sophomore Christiaan Maas has been named to the 2024 watch list for the Ben Hogan Award presented by PNC Bank, the Hogan Trophy Award Foundation, the Friends of Golf (FOG) and the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) announced Friday afternoon. Maas is one of 40 players named to the watch list for the annual award which honors the top men's NCAA Division I, II or III, NAIA or NJCAA college golfer based on all collegiate, amateur and professional events over the previous 12 months.
This summer, Maas finished as runner-up at the Western Amateur Championship and competed for the International Team at the prestigious Arnold Palmer Cup. He is No. 12 in the latest World Amateur Golf Ranking (Feb. 7). Maas competed in each of UT's five fall events and ranks second on the team in scoring average (70.63). He placed third at the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational (Sept. 15-17) with a 7-under-par 133 (69-64).
As a freshman last season, Maas earned second-team PING All-America and PING All-Central Region Team honors and was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year in addition to being selected to the All-Big 12 Team. He led the team with a 70.57 stroke average and registered five top-10 and 10 top-20 individual finishes during his 12 stroke-play tourney appearances. Maas shot par or better in 23 of his 35 stroke-play rounds last year, including 12 rounds in the 60s. He earned a collegiate-best individual runner-up finish at the Southern Highlands Collegiate (Feb. 26-28) with a 10-under-par 20 (66-69-71).
The Ben Hogan Award presented by PNC Bank has honored the outstanding amateur collegiate golfer at Colonial Country Club since 2002. Prior to its move to Fort Worth, the original Ben Hogan Trophy, which was awarded based on a different list of criteria, was issued at Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles beginning in 1990.
This year's list of 10 semifinalists, which could include individuals not on the watch list, will be unveiled on Friday, April 19. That group will be paired down to three finalists on Thursday, May 2. The finalists will attend a black-tie dinner on Monday, May 20 at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, where the winner will be crowned.
