No. 2/2 Softball slams Hofstra, runs win streak to five

Texas maintains offensive fireworks, extends unanswered scoring run to 38
AUSTIN, Texas – The University of Texas softball program didn't have the opportunity to set off fireworks after the sun set, so the Longhorns just went ahead and fired away at the scoreboard en route to earning a 13-0, five-inning win over Hofstra on Saturday.
In three games — just 15 total innings — of this weekend's Longhorn Invitational, Texas has outscored its opponents 40-2, including a streak of 38 unanswered runs after Northwestern State scored two in the top of the second of Friday afternoon's contest that the Longhorns ultimately won 10-2.
Kayden Henry, one of three true freshmen in the starting lineup for Texas on Saturday, lit the fuse on the first firework by sending a 2-2 pitch — during the first at bat of the bottom of the first — 254 feet to center field for her fourth home run on the season. Reese Atwood, Alyssa Washington, Katie Cimusz and Ashton Maloney all produced run-scoring plate appearances during the Longhorns' seven-run first inning.
The 7-0 Texas lead was ballooned two innings later by a six-run, six-hit bottom of the third that was highlighted by run-scoring at bats from Jordyn Whitaker, Henry, Mia Scott and Stewart before being capped by a sacrifice fly off the bat of Joley Mitchell.
Against the pitching combination of Teagan Kavan (7-0) and Sophia Simpson, the Pride only managed two base hits — both singles and both occurring during the game's first two innings — off the pair of Longhorn right-handers.
FROM HEAD COACH MIKE WHITE
"Yeah, obviously Kayden Henry really set the tone for us in today's game with her home run in the bottom of the first. That was such a great way to start the game and then we were really able to break it open. We were really just consistent throughout the day, so it was a good day for the offense today."
GAME NOTES
- For the second time this season, the Texas Longhorn offense has now scored 10-or-more runs in three consecutive games following Saturday's 13-run offensive outburst.
- The Longhorns scored 16 (Feb. 10 vs. San Diego), 16 (Feb. 10 at then-No. 10/8 UCLA) and 10 (Feb. 11 at LMU) runs in consecutive games during Texas' season-opening trip to California.
- By opening Saturday's game with three shutout innings, Texas' freshman right-handed pitcher Teagan Kavan extended her consecutive scoreless inning streak to 25.0 in a row, 7.0 back of surpassing Mac Morgan's 31.2 consecutive shutout innings (April 6, 2023 to May 3, 2023) for the longest streak by an active Longhorn pitcher.
- With its six-run third inning against Hofstra on Saturday afternoon, the Texas offense has now scored six-or-more runs in a single inning on nine separate occasions through 17 games this season.
- The nine innings with six-or-more runs this season ties the program's single-season record set throughout the 2012 campaign.
- However, the 2012 did not record its ninth such inning until May 6, 2012, therefore making the 2023 team the first to accomplish the feat within 17-or-fewer games to begin a new season.
- The nine innings with six-or-more runs this season ties the program's single-season record set throughout the 2012 campaign.
- By drawing a four-pitch walk three batters into the bottom of the first, Texas freshman catcher Katie Stewart extended her team-leading on-base streak to 15 consecutive games, which is two games longer than Reese Atwood's 13-game on-base streak to begin the season.
UP NEXT
- Texas (16-1) will look to improve on an 8-1 record at Red & Charline McCombs Field this season when the Longhorns take on Hofstra (2-9), again, at 10 a.m. on Sunday, March 3.
