No. 2/1 Softball’s Kavan picks up first career Big 12 honor

Teagan Kavan did not allow a run, extra base hit in 10.0 innings of work
AUSTIN, Texas – The University of Texas picked up a Big 12 Conference weekly softball award for a program-record fourth consecutive week as freshman right-handed pitcher Teagan Kavan was selected as the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Tuesday afternoon.
Kavan, a West Des Moines, Iowa native, contributed 10.0 of Texas' 29.0 scoreless innings pitched during five victories throughout last week. Her .121 opponent batting average was the lowest by any Big 12 pitcher who faced 30-or-more batters throughout the week. She also finished the week with 13 strikeouts throughout two appearances, which were the most by any Big 12 pitcher who made two-or-fewer appearances in the circle on the week.
Kavan's 0.00 earned run average (ERA) was also the lowest by any Big 12 pitcher who tossed double-figure innings throughout the week as well. On the week, she finished with a 6.5:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio after fanning 13 batters and walking only two.
Her statistics last week were highlighted by a seven-inning complete game shutout against Texas State, which had scored 45 runs throughout its seven-game winning streak leading into last Wednesday night's mid-week matchup, in San Marcos. Kavan, celebrating her birthday on the same day, allowed just two hits — both singles — and matched her career high with nine strikeouts against the Bobcats.
Kavan returned to the circle on Saturday, March and threw three scoreless innings in a five-inning victory over Hofstra. During the contest, she struck out four batters and surrendered just two hits, both singles. Against the Pride, she also started a 1-6-3 double play on a comebacker into the pitching circle in the top of the first.

Texas (18-1) will look for its 11th win at Red & Charline McCombs Field in 12 games so far this season when Kavan and her Longhorn softball teammates take on UTA (8-14) at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6.
