Austin – Texas Men's Tennis garnered seven selections on the 2024 Big 12 All-Tournament Team, the conference announced Tuesday. The Longhorns collected honors at five singles positions, along with two in doubles.
The singles accolades included senior No. 1 Eliot Spizzirri at No. 1, freshman No. 31 Gilles-Arnaud Bailly at No. 3, junior No. 87 Pierre-Yves Bailly at No. 4, senior Siem Woldeab at No. 5, and sophomore No. 54 Jonah Braswell as co-No. 6.
In doubles, Pierre-Yves Bailly was joined by senior Eshan Talluri at No. 2, while seniors Cleeve Harper and Micah Braswell combined for honors at No. 3.
It was the Longhorns' first Big 12 tournament title since 2018, and the sixth in program history. Meanwhile, it was also the fifth time the program has won both the tournament and regular season championships in the same season with the last time coming in 2010.
Spizzirri went 2-0 in singles at the No. 1 position, including clinching the overall match against BYU and a win over No. 23 Tyler Zink that gave Texas a 3-1 lead over Oklahoma State.
Gilles-Arnaud Bailly won all three of his singles matches at No. 3 with two ranked wins over No. 55 Pedro Vives of TCU that clinched the championship, and No. 96 Alex Garcia of Oklahoma State that was first off the singles court and evened the overall score at 1-1. He also defeated Zach Fuchs of BYU for a 3-0 lead for the Longhorns.
Pierre-Yves Bailly was 2-0 in singles at No. 4 with a win over No. 72 Lui Maxted of TCU that gave Texas a 3-0 lead. Prior to that, he downed Erik Schiessl of Oklahoma State to clinch that overall match.
Woldeab put together an efficient 6-2, 6-2 win over Duncan Chan at No. 5 to be first off the singles court against TCU, while he was potentially one game away from a win against BYU when the match was clinched.
Jonah Braswell had an impressive 6-0, 6-1 victory over Ty Wunderlich of Oklahoma State to give the Longhorns a 2-1 lead against the Cowboys.
The duo of Pierre-Yves Bailly and Talluri posted two wins at No. 2 doubles, including a 6-2 victory over the No. 87 pair of Chan and Maxted for TCU to even that doubles point, along with a 6-3 win over Garcia and Francisco Pini to be first off the court against Oklahoma State.
Harper and Micah Braswell clinched doubles for Texas against TCU with a 6-2 win over Jack Pinnington and Kaj Quirijns, and prior to that, swept Tygen Goldammer and TJ Wells of BYU to be first off the court in that match.
Honorees were selected by a vote of the league's head coaches with the coaches not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes.
After receiving the Big 12's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by winning the Big 12 Championship, the Longhorns will await the NCAA selection show to determine their seeding and hosting. The show will air on NCAA.com on Monday, April 29, at 5 p.m. CT.
