Big 12 Conference, D1Softball and NFCA all recognize Reese Atwood for her performance
AUSTIN, Texas – Following a historic, record-breaking three-game series at Texas Tech over the weekend, Texas sophomore Reese Atwood has been named the Big 12 Conference, D1Softball and NFCA's Player of the Week, all three organizations announced Tuesday morning.
Atwood was instrumental in helping the top-ranked Texas Longhorns to their first regular season conference championship since the 2010 season as she led the Big 12 in batting average (.700), hits (7), hits per game (2.33), home runs (4), runs batted in (13), total bases (19), slugging percentage (1.900) and fielding percentage (1.000). Her four home runs were double as many as the next closest Big 12 student-athlete, while her 13 RBI on the weekend were more than double the next closest non-UT student-athlete.
The Tuloso Midway product out of Sandia, Texas set a career high with nine RBI in Texas' 23-0 win over Texas Tech on Saturday, May 4, while also becoming the program's new single-season home run leader during the same contest. Nearly 24 hours later, Atwood returned to Rocky Johnson Field in Lubbock and became the first Longhorn softball student-athlete to surpass 20 home runs in a single season as she connected for two in the series finale on Sunday, May 5.
Atwood will enter this week's 2024 Phillips 66 Big 12 Softball Championship with a .433/.481/.917 slash line with 21 home runs, 83 RBI, 144 total bases, 68 hits and 36 runs scored in 157 official plate appearances. She leads the Big 12 Conference in both home runs and RBI, while also leading the nation in RBI, too.
