Men's Swimming's Hobson, Kibler earn spots to Paris with one-three finish in 200 free at U.S. Olympic Trials

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — University of Texas rising senior Luke Hobson and former Longhorn Drew Kibler punched their tickets to the Paris Olympics by finishing first and third respectively in the 200-meter freestyle final on Monday evening at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Swimming inside Lucas Oil Stadium. Hobson claimed the automatic spot in the 200 free by winning the race, while Kibler qualified for the team as part of the 4x200 free relay (along with Hobson) with his third-place result.
In addition, rising sophomore Will Modglin finished in sixth place in the final of the 100-meter backstroke.
The top finisher in the individual swimming events at the U.S. Olympic Trials earns an automatic spot on the official Team USA roster, while the runner-up is considered a near lock to make the team as well. In the 200-meter freestyle, the top four finishers qualify for the 4x200 free relay.
Hobson posted a time of 1:44.89 to claim the victory in the 200 free final and was followed in second by Chris Guiliano (1:45.38). Kibler placed third with a mark of 1:45.60, and rising sophomore finished eighth at 1:47.37.
Modglin recorded a time of 53.69 to finish sixth in the 100 back final. Ryan Murphy (52.22) and Hunter Armstrong (52.72) took the top two spots in the 100 back.
In Monday morning's prelims, rising senior David Johnston recorded the third-fastest time with a mark of 7:52.49. Johnston will compete in the 800 free final on Tuesday evening.
