AUSTIN, Texas — University of Texas senior Nathan Petronzio has been named the Big 12 Conference Men's Golf Newcomer of the Year, the league office announced Friday. In addition, Petronzio and sophomore Christiaan Maas both earned spots on the 10-person All-Big 12 Team.
The All-Big 12 Team along with the Player and Newcomer of the Year honors were determined based on the season's final Clippd rankings. Coach of the Year was voted on by Big 12 head coaches.
Petronzio garnered PING All-Central Region team accolades earlier this spring. A graduate transfer who spent his previous three seasons at SMU, Petronzio ranked second on the team in scoring average (71.66) and tallied four top-10 and seven top-25 individual finishes this year. Nineteen of his 32 rounds this season were par or better, including eight rounds in the 60s. He recorded a season-best runner-up finish at the NCAA Austin Regional (May 13-15) with an 8-under 205 (67-69-69). Petronzio earned Big 12 All-Tournament Team honors with his tie for eighth at the Big 12 Championship (April 22-24) at 4-under 284 (70-75-70-69).
Maas previously garnered Division I PING third-team All-America and Golfweek third-team All-America honors along with PING All-Central Region team accolades this year. This marks his second career All-Big 12 Team selection, as he earned Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and All-Big 12 Team recognition last year. Maas completed his sophomore season with a team-best 71.09 stroke average and is No. 15 in the latest World Amateur Golf Rankings (June 5). He competed in 13 of UT's 14 events this year and recorded four top-10 and seven top-20 individual finishes. Nineteen of his 34 rounds this season were par or better, including 12 rounds in the 60s. Maas claimed his first collegiate career individual victory at the NCAA Austin Regional (May 13-15) with a 9-under 204 (71-67-66). He also recorded a third-place finish at the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational (Sept. 15-17) with a 7-under 133 (69-64) and tied for fourth at the Johnnie-O Intercollegiate (Mar. 11-12) with an 8-under 208 (69-68-71). Maas tied for 11th place at the NCAA Championships (May 24-27) with a 72-hole score of even-par 288 (74-71-70-73) and earned a spot on the NCAA Championship All-Tournament Team.
