Kos leads Hungary to eighth-place finish in 4x100 free relay, and Corbeau advances to Sunday’s final in the 100 breast.
PARIS, France — University of Texas rising sophomore Aaron Shackell registered an eighth-place finish in the 400-meter freestyle final on Saturday evening at the Paris Olympic Games inside the Paris La Defense Arena. In addition, rising junior Hubert Kos helped Hungary to an eighth-place showing in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay final and former Longhorn Caspar Corbeau qualified for the final of the 100-meter breaststroke.
Shackell, who transferred to Texas earlier this summer, posted a time of 3:47.00 in the 400 free final. Lukas Maertens of Germany claimed the gold medal with a mark of 3:41.78.
Kos, who also transferred to Texas earlier this spring, swam the anchor leg for Hungary in the 4x100 free relay final and led his team to an eighth-place result in a time of 3:13.11. Kos posted a split of 48.51 during his anchor leg of the final. Team USA earned the gold medal with a time of 3:09.28, while Australia claimed silver at 3:10.35.
During Saturday evening's 100-meter breaststroke semifinals, Corbeau recorded the fifth-fastest time (59.24) to advance to Sunday night's final. Two-time defending gold medalist Adam Peaty of Great Britain posted the fastest time of the semifinals with a mark of 58.86.
In Saturday morning's prelims, Corbeau advanced to the 100-meter breaststroke semifinals as he recorded the fastest time of the heats with a mark of 59.04. Corbeau's time was 0.14 in front of Peaty (59.18). Shackell registered the sixth-fastest time in the 400-meter freestyle heats with a personal-best mark of 3:45.45 to qualify for the final. Kos swam the anchor leg for Hungary in the 4x100 free relay heats and guided his team to a seventh-place finish in a time of 3:12.96 to advance to the final. Kos posted a split of 48.13 during his anchor leg of the prelims.
