Former Longhorn star becomes two-time medalist in her Olympic debut.
PARIS, France – Texas standout sprinter Julien Alfred claimed her second medal in her Olympics debut on Tuesday afternoon at the Stade de France.
Alfred won the silver medal in the 200-meter dash with her time of 22.08. The St. Lucia native recently won the 100-meter gold medal with her lifetime-best time of 10.72. The gold medal was the first-ever medal for the country at the Olympics.
The seven-time NCAA champion for Texas became just the second Longhorn to ever earn a medal in the 200m at the Olympics, joining Juliet Cuthbert who also won silver in the 1992 games. Alfred is also the first Longhorn since Sanya Richards-Ross, who won two golds at the 2012 Olympics, to earn multiple medals at the same games and first to do it in their debut.
Fellow Texas graduate Lanae-Tava Thomas finished 18th overall in the 200m with her time of 22.77 in the semifinals. It was Thomas' first Olympics appearance.
On the runway, USA long jump champion and NCAA long jump record holder Tara Davis-Woodhall claimed the top qualifying mark of 7.90m to advance to the finals. It will be her second-straight finals appearance at the Olympics. Ackelia Smith of Jamaica will compete in her second final of these Olympic Games after finishing with the 10th-best mark of 6.59m.
