Eva Okaro makes history as Longhorns dominate in Tuscaloosa.
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The No. 3 Texas Women's Swimming and Diving team defeated Alabama, 211.5–88.5, on Friday at the Alabama Natatorium. The Longhorns won 13 of 16 events, highlighted by standout efforts from Erin Gemmell, Jillian Cox and Eva Okaro.
Cox led the Longhorns early with a win in the 1,000-yard freestyle, finishing in 9:29.01, while Kate Hurst followed in second at 9:37.74.
Erin Gemmell, a U.S. National Team member and World Championships gold medalist, continued her strong form with two individual victories, winning the 200 freestyle in 1:43.30 and the 200 individual medley in 1:56.94, while adding a runner-up finish in the 100 free at 47.79.
Eva Okaro swept both sprint events, winning the 50 freestyle in 21.87 and the 100 freestyle in 47.48. Piper Enge added two more victories, taking the 100 breaststroke in 59.45 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:09.62.
Campbell Stoll won the 200 butterfly in 1:53.89, and Lillian Nesty claimed the 200 backstroke with a 1:54.07 finish.
In diving, Bayleigh Cranford won the 1-meter with 305.48 points, while Sarah Carruthers took first on the 3-meter with 324.75 points.
Texas wrapped up the meet with a victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay, as Nesty, Gemmell, Okaro and Lucy Mehraban combined for a 3:11.97 finish.
Okaro's anchor-leg split of 20.97 seconds made her the first Texas woman to ever split a 20 from a relay swing, marking a new sprint milestone for the Longhorns.
The Longhorns return home to host Tennessee on Friday, Oct. 24 at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. Prelims begin at 10 a.m. CT with finals scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CT.
