AUSTIN, Texas — A pair of prep stars from the state of Texas have each signed an Athletic Scholarship Agreement (ASA) to play golf at The University of Texas, head coach John Fields announced Wednesday. Brooks Harper and Sterling Hurd will join the Longhorns as freshmen for the 2026-27 season.
A native of Dallas, Texas, who currently attends The Covenant School, Harper is the No. 40-ranked player in the nation and the No. 8-ranked player in the state of Texas in the class of 2026 by Junior Golf Scoreboard. He captured individual titles at the 2024 AJGA Junior at Innisbrook (5-under 211) and the 2023 AJGA Open Junior at The Bridges (6-under 207). Harper also competed in the 2024 U.S. Junior Amateur and the 2024 U.S. Four Ball Championship while paired with his brother, Luke, who is currently a freshman golfer at Dartmouth College. He also placed third at the 2025 AJGA Golf Performance Academy Junior Championship (April 17-20) and finished fifth at the 2025 Nike Junior Invitational (June 29-July 1).
"I'm super happy that Brooks Harper is now a Texas Longhorn," Fields said. "An orangeblood at heart, Brooks has been an outstanding young talent for quite some time. Having won multiple times on the AJGA Tour, Brooks will be a great addition to our program as both a player and a team leader. His work ethic and desire will be second to none."
A native of Austin, Texas, who currently attends Westlake High School, Hurd is the No. 22-ranked player in the nation and the No. 4-ranked player in the state of Texas in the class of 2026 by Junior Golf Scoreboard. He helped lead Westlake to the Class 6A boys golf state championship in both his freshman (2023) and junior (2025) seasons. Hurd finished second on the individual leaderboard at the 2025 state championship. He claimed individual titles at the 2023 AJGA Kevin Harvick Foundation Junior Championship (7-under 209) and the 2023 AJGA Arnold Palmer Invitational Junior (1-under 215). Hurd also competed in the 2024 U.S. Amateur and the 2024 Western Amateur and placed third at the 2024 Wester Junior Amateur.
"I am thrilled to welcome Sterling Hurd to the Forty Acres," Fields said. "Sterling is a product of a great Westlake High School program right here in Austin, Texas. A member of multiple state championship teams along with additional experience as a participant in the 2024 U.S. Amateur, Sterling's abilities and success will allow him the opportunity to be a true impact player."
