Drummond arrives at Texas after helping guide Wake Forest to its first-ever national championship appearance
AUSTIN, Texas — University of Texas head coach Margueritte Bates announced the hiring of assistant coach Courtney Drummond on Thursday.
Drummond comes to The Forty Acres after spending the past four seasons at Wake Forest, where she helped the Demon Deacons reach new heights. Wake Forest finished the 2023 regular season with a program-record two losses before reaching its second College Cup and first-ever national championship game in 2024.
"I had hoped for years for an opportunity to work on a staff with Courtney," Bates said. "She brings a tactical acuity to the field that is savvy and honed by international experience. Her passion is individual player development and her commitment to that area is unmatched. Her impact on our student-athletes, staff and program will be immediate and exceedingly positive. I can't wait to get started with Courtney!"
With Drummond on staff, the Demon Deacons brought in three nationally ranked recruiting class, with the two most recent groups among the top 25 in the country.
Under her guidance, Wake Forest garnered 13 All-ACC honors, including 2025 ACC Freshman of the Year Kylie Maxwell. Maxwell was slotted No. 1 on TopDrawerSoccer's Midseason Freshmen Rankings.
Drummond tutored three Deacs who earned spots on the United Soccer Coaches All-American Teams, highlighted by 2024 MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist Caiya Hanks.
Overall, Wake Forest sent 10 players to the professional level, spanning across the NWSL, Northern Super League, USL Super League and overseas.
"I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to join the University of Texas," Drummond said. "I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to Chris Del Conte, Sarah Baumgartner and Margueritte Bates for entrusting me with this position. The power and rich tradition of Texas Athletics are truly inspiring, and I'm thrilled to embrace all that comes with being part of such a renowned program. Working alongside Margueritte to build on her vision for Texas Soccer is especially exciting. She leads and coaches with intention, consistently pushing her student-athletes and staff to be their best. A true mastermind of the game, Margueritte creates a highly competitive environment, while empowering her players the freedom to display creativity and preparing them for the professional level. Her demand for excellence is inspiring, and it is an honor and privilege to be a part of Texas soccer."
Drummond has also taken her talents to the U.S. Youth National Team system, serving as an assistant coach for the U-15, U-16, U-17 and U-23 clubs.
Prior to her tenure at Wake Forest, Drummond spent 11 seasons at City SC Carlsbad.
Drummond sports additional collegiate experience as an assistant at California State University San Marcos. With the Cougars, Drummond helped mentor 28 All-Conference selections and six All-Americans. CSUSM won three conference titles and four NAIA tournaments with her on the sideline.
Before Drummond left CSUSM in May 2016, she was a key part of the University and Athletics Department transition to NCAA Division II. Drummond departed CSUSM to concentrate on ushering in and becoming the Girls U.S. Soccer Development Academy Director at LA Galaxy San Diego.
As a player, Drummond started 72 of 73 matches, in which she appeared with CSUSM. She scored a record seven goals as a freshman in the program's first season and steered CSUSM to back-to-back Association of Independent Institutions conference crowns in 2008 and 2009. Drummond also appeared in a pair of NAIA National Championships.
