Teagan Kavan becomes seventh pitcher in Texas history to earn NFCA honor
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Less than 24 hours after being named the Southeastern Conference's Pitcher of the Week, Texas sophomore right-hander pitcher Teagan Kavan was chosen as the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) National Pitcher of the Week, the organization announced Tuesday afternoon.
Kavan's honor marks the second consecutive season the Longhorns have had a pitcher selected as the national pitcher of the week after Estelle Czech was chosen following last season's series win over then-No. 1 Oklahoma. In addition to Kavan and Czech, Hailey Dolcini, Miranda Elish, Blaire Luna, Cat Osterman and Christa Williams are the only other Texas student-athletes to earn the honor.
Over the course of Texas' five-game schedule during last weekend's Bevo Classic, Kavan made two starts – both against then-No. 11/8 Texas Tech – and worked 13.0 innings against the nationally ranked Red Raiders. She became the first Longhorn pitcher to strike out 18-or-more batters in a single game since Cat Osterman on June 1, 2006, while becoming the first Mike White-coached pitcher to reach the 18-strikeout mark since former Oregon pitcher Cheridan Hawkins on Feb. 14, 2014, 11 years to the date of Kavan's outing.
Kavan's 18 strikeouts against the Red Raiders were the second most by a Division I student-athlete during the early stages of the 2025 season as Ole Miss' Miali Guachino struck out 19 Golden Eagles in the Rebels' 10-inning loss at Southern Miss on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2025.
The NFCA honor is the third for Kavan this week following her weekend's performance: SEC Pitcher of the Week, Softball America Star of the Week, NFCA National Pitcher of the Week.
