No. 1 Men’s Swim and Dive’s Maurer dismantles pool record in 500 freestyle, Longhorns bring home four medals on second day of SEC Championships

The top-ranked Longhorns remain in control after 14 events.
ATHENS, Ga. – Rex Maurer lowered the pool record in the 500 freestyle and the No. 1 Texas Longhorns brought home four medals on the second day of the 2025 SEC Championships Wednesday night at Gabrielsen Natatorium. Texas remains in control through 14 events with 505 total points.
Florida is in second with 421.5 points followed by Tennessee (3rd-327.5), Georgia (4th-309). Texas A&M (5th-264), LSU (6th-237), Alabama (7th-225), Auburn (8th-199), Kentucky (9th-176), South Carolina (10th-152) and Missouri (11th-128).
Commencing the evening finals session, Texas' 200 free relay team of Chris Guiliano, Kyle Peck, Hubert Kos and Will Modglin finished third in 1:14.94 behind first-place Tennessee (1:12.80), who set an NCAA record, and runner-up Florida (1:13.29).
Following the 500 free prelims, seven Longhorns advanced to the evening finals – the most of any SEC team. Rex Maurer took home gold after winning in a pool-record time of 4:07.09 while David Johnston placed sixth in 4:10.74 in the A Final as well.
An SEC-best four Longhorns represented in the 200 IM A Final led by Will Modglin's runner-up finish (1:40.64) while Hubert Kos also claimed a spot on the podium after placing third (1:41.39). Camden Taylor (1:41.58) and Nate Germonprez (1:42.72) finished seventh and eighth, respectively.
Chris Guiliano placed eighth in the 50 free A Final at 18.85.

The 2025 SEC Championships continue at 8:30 a.m. CT Thursday with the prelims for the 400 IM, 100 butterfly and 200 freestyle. On the diving side, the men's 1-meter prelims will begin at 11 a.m. followed by the consolation final at 1:10 p.m. Thursday night's finals session will get under way at 4:30 p.m. for the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle and men's one meter.
