Indoor Track and Field advances four and Lewis PBs at SEC Championships

Kendrick Smallwood and Brandon Schirck climb UT's all-time performer list.
COLLEGE STATION – The Texas track and field program advanced four to Saturday's finals at the SEC Indoor Championships, while Brock Lewis set a personal best in the heptathlon to close out day two of competition.
Lewis set a PB in the heptathlon with a score of 5,394 points, besting his previous score by eight points. The sophomore began the day in 10th with 2,857 points. He began the final day of the hep running the 60-meter hurdles in 8.31 seconds. He followed with a jump of 4.70m (15-5) in the pole vault and ran a personal best 2:36.53 in the 1,000-meter to end the day to score four team points.
Kendrick Smallwood also recorded a personal best after he qualified for the men's 60-meter in 7.68 seconds. The time improved his spot at No. 4 on the UT All-Time Performer List and matched the sixth-fastest performance in school history.
Logan Popelka was the final male to advance after he ran the fifth-fastest 400-meter qualifying time in 46.20.
In the men's weight throw, Brandon Schirck moved up to No. 4 on the UT All-Time Performer list from his throw of 20.12m (66-0.25). His third-round throw was a six-foot personal best for the freshman. He finished 15th overall in the competition.
On the women's side, Elizabeth Stockman was one of two Longhorns to advance to a Saturday final after she finished the mile in 4:47.41. Carleta Bernard advanced in the 60-meter finals after running 7.32 in the prelims.
The Longhorns will compete in nine finals, including the women's 200-meter, both the men and women's 3,000-meter and both 4x400-meter relays. Both shot puts, the women's pole vault and men's triple jump will be the final field events for Texas. Both teams are in ninth after day two, with the women scoring 10 points and the men eight.
