Scott sparks No. 1/1 Softball’s offense in Saturday victory over NMSU
03.01.2025 | Softball
Texas takes first-ever meeting with New Mexico State in Austin.
AUSTIN, Texas – Heading into the bottom of the third of Texas' 5-2 win over New Mexico State, the top-ranked Longhorns needed an offensive spark. Fortunately for UT softball head coach Mike White his spark plug Mia Scott was in the batting lineup and would be due up if two teammates got on base.
Not only did Kaydee Bennett and Ashton Maloney do just that with back-to-back infield singles, but Kayden Henry laid down a perfect bunt to start her third-inning plate appearance before safely reaching first to load the bases for Scott.
With only one out in the frame, Scott sent an 0-1 pitch from New Mexico State pitcher Jaileen Mancha (1-1) back up the middle to score Bennett from third and break a 0-0 tie.
Two innings later, Scott pushed the Longhorn lead out to 3-0 with a one-out, two-run double to left field to score Bennett and Henry, who both successfully reached base earlier in the inning. The run-scoring hit pushed Scott's run batted in (RBI) total to three for the game, the most this season and first time she's drive in multiple runs in a single game since Feb. 7, 2025, when she plated two with a double in the top of the second of UT's 8-0 win at Louisiana.
Three pitches later, Scott joined her teammates in the Texas dugout after scoring on a two-run home run off the bat of Katie Stewart.
The Aggies attempted a come-from-behind rally during the following inning as three consecutive batters reached base, but only scored two runs before Teagan Kavan (5-1) retired the next four consecutive batters to end the game.
FROM HEAD COACH MIKE WHITE
"It was great watching Mia (Scott) contributing to the game in all phases. We need her. She's a senior and has the experience, so we just have to keep her clicking to make all this work. Obviously, Teagan (Kavan) threw really well today even though she gave up a couple of runs late, but, for the most part today, was very dominate today. Our speedsters – Kaydee Bennett, Ashton Maloney, Kayden Henry and Mia Scott – found a way to get on base as well and contribute to seven of our eight hits today, before (Katie Stewart) came up with a home run and put the game away."
