The Longhorns and Horned Frogs split a pair of regular season matches by the same 4-1 score.
Fort Worth – No. 3 Texas Men's Tennis fell at No. 2 TCU, 4-1, at the Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth on Tuesday. With the result, the Longhorns and Horned Frogs split a pair of regular season matches by the same 4-1 score.
After TCU took the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 2, senior No. 64 Pierre-Yves Bailly was first off the singles court with a victory at No. 3 to even the overall score. However, the Horned Frogs then claimed wins at Nos. 1, 4 and 5 to clinch the win. The Longhorns also held a lead at No. 2 when play stopped and had earlier opportunities at Nos. 5 and 6 where they came up short in first-set tiebreakers.
Following doubles, Bailly earned a top-15 win in impressive fashion with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over No. 15 Lui Maxted. Both players held their first two serves to start the match, and after that, Bailly held and then broke on a deuce point to start a 9-0 run to a first-set win and a 5-0 lead in the second. Maxted got one game back with a hold, but Bailly closed it from there to win 10 of the last 11 games and knot the overall match, 1-1.
TCU retook the lead as freshman No. 7 Timo Legout was defeated by No. 20 Jack Pinnington, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1. In the first set, Pinnington broke first for a 3-2 lead, and although Legout got the break back for 4-4, Pinnington broke again and served out the set. In the second, Pinnington again broke for 3-2, this time on a deuce point, and went on a 4-0 run to the finish, taking the match on another deuce point.
Junior No. 39 Jonah Braswell was then downed by Cooper Woestendick at No. 4, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4. Woestendick secured the first break for a 3-1 lead, but Braswell broke right back. However, Woestendick broke again for 4-2 and later closed the set with an another break for 6-3. In the second set, after the first three games were breaks, Woestendick consolidated his second one with a deuce-point hold for a 3-1 lead. That would be the difference in the set, as it stayed on serve from there to Woestendick's win.
The clinch came at No. 5 where freshman Sebastian Eriksson fell to Al Pedrico Kravtsov, 7-6 (2), 6-3. Kravtsov broke first for a 3-1 lead, but Eriksson broke back to start a 3-0 run. Kravtsov then put the set back on serve with a break in the next game for 4-4, and after Eriksson held on a deuce-point for 5-5, he broke for the lead, but Kravtsov kept the set alive by breaking back for a tiebreaker. In the breaker, Eriksson grabbed the first point for a mini-break, but Kravtsov went on a 4-0 run and maintained the lead to the win. In the second set, the first three games were breaks until Kravtsov held for a 3-1 lead. The set then stayed on serve until Kravtsov broke on a deuce point to win the match.
That left two matches unfinished with junior No. 13 Sebastian Gorzny up a break in the third set against No. 2 Pedro Vives, 1-6, 7-6 (2), 1-0. The first set was controlled by Vives, who pushed out to a 5-0 lead on the way to a 6-1 win. In the second set, Gorzny held and broke for a 2-0 lead. He had a chance for 3-0 on a deuce point, but Vives broke back, and the match stayed on serve until Vives broke again for a 5-4 lead. Gorzny then fought off Vives' chance to serve for the match, and the set was on serve to a tiebreaker. There, Gorzny got out to leads of 2-0 and 4-1 en route to the 7-2 win. Gorzny then broke in the opening game of the third set when play halted.
In the remaining match, sophomore Lucas Brown had dropped a first-set tiebreaker, but was up a break in the second against Roger Pascual, 6-7 (4), 4-3. Pascual broke to open the match and held for a 2-0 lead. Brown got the break back for 2-2, but that would be the first of four-straight breaks until Pascual held for a 5-3 lead. Brown also held and the. broke again to even it, 5-5, but another streak of three-straight breaks, including two of those keeping the set alive for Brown, sent it to a tiebreaker. Pascual grabbed a mini-break on the opening point of the tiebreaker, and although Brown got it back, on the next point, Pascual held for a 2-1 lead that he would not relinquish. Pascual moved out to a 5-2 lead, and despite Brown getting back within 5-4, he was unable to catch Pascual before the win. To open the second set, the players exchanged breaks, starting with Brown, who was then the next to break for a 3-2 lead on a deuce point. Brown consolidated for 4-2, but the match stopped after Pascual held to get back to 4-3.
Earlier in doubles, the No. 10 duo of Legout and Brown was downed by the No. 1 pair of Vives and Maxted, 6-2, at No. 1. TCU secured the only two breaks of the match for 2-0 and to win on a deuce point, 6-2.
The point was then clinched when Gorzny and Braswell were defeated by Pinnington and Woestendick, 6-3, at No. 2. The Horned Frogs also broke first in the second game of that match on a deuce point, but the Longhorns answered it and held for 2-2. TCU then claimed the only other break of the match, which came on a deuce point for a 5-3 lead before serving it out.
The remaining unfinished match at No. 3 between the duo of Bailly and Eriksson and the pair of Kravtsov and Duncan Chan was then on serve all the way to a 5-4 TCU lead when play stopped.
The Longhorns (14-3, 5-0 SEC) will return home and to conference play against No. 31 Alabama on Sunday, March 16 at 12 p.m. CT.
