The Longhorns returned to SEC play and moved to 6-0 in the conference.
Austin – No. 3 Texas Men's Tennis swept No. 31 Alabama, 4-0, on Sunday at the Texas Tennis Center. The Longhorns moved to 6-0 in the SEC and 15-3 overall.
After Texas took the doubles point with a pair of 6-1 wins at Nos. 1 and 2, the Longhorns received victories from freshman No. 7 Timo Legout at No. 1, sophomore Lucas Brown at No. 6 and junior No. 64 Pierre-Yves Bailly at No. 3 for the clinch.
Following doubles, Legout was first off the singles court and handed Spring 2024 NCAA Singles Champion and current No. 17 Filip Planinsek his first loss of the season in a decisive 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 1. After both players held their first serves with Planinsek doing so on a deuce point, Legout went on a 5-0 run capped by consecutive deuce-point wins to take the set. The second set then stayed on serve through the first eight games with Planinsek twice holding at deuce for 2-1 and 4-3 leads, but Legout produced the break he needed for a 5-4 advantage before serving out the match.
Not long after that, Brown extended the overall Texas lead to 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Zach Foster. In the first set, Foster held his opening serve, but Brown grabbed back-to-back deuce points as part of a 3-0 run. Foster cut the lead to 3-2 with a hold in the next game, but Brown went on a 6-0 run to take the set and establish a 3-0 lead in the second. Foster got back within 3-2 with a break and a hold, but Brown closed out the match with a 3-0 run, including a deuce-point break in the second to last game.
Moments later, Bailly clinched for the Longhorns with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Enzo Aguiard. Bailly began the match with a break and a deuce-point hold for a 2-0 lead. He later broke again on a deuce point for 4-1, but Aguiard answered it and then held to get within 4-3. Howerver, Bailly set out on a 6-0 run to win the set and post a 4-0 lead in the second, including a deuce-point break in the second game of that set. Aguiard claimed the next two games on a deuce-point break and a hold to trail, 4-2, but Bailly finished it from there for the win.
Three matches were then left unfinished including junior No. 13 Sebastian Gorzny who was down, 1-0, but on serve in his third set against No. 75 Roan Jones, 4-6, 6-3, 0-1, at No. 2. Jones was the first to break for a 2-1 lead and then consolidated for 3-1 on a deuce point. Gorzny got the break back for 4-4, but Jones broke again and served out the first set. Jones also broke to begin the second set, but Gorzny answered with consecutive deuce-point wins to start a 4-0 run, and the rest of the set was on serve to his 6-3 win. Jones then held in the first game of the third set before play stopped.
Junior No. 39 Jonah Braswell was leading Andrii Zimnokh, 6-3, 2-4, at No. 4. In the first set, Braswell held on a deuce point and broke for a 2-0 lead, but Zimnokh broke back and held to even it. The next three games were also holds, including at deuce for Zimnokh for 3-3, but Braswell broke again for a 5-3 lead and served out the set from there. In the second, Zimnokh moved out to a 3-0 lead after holding in the first game and taking back-to-back deuce points. Braswell then held and got the break back on a deuce point for 3-2, but Zimnokh once again broke at deuce for 4-2 when play halted.
In the last match at No. 5, freshman Sebastian Eriksson was up a set on Damien Nezar, 6-4, 4-5. The first four games of the match were on serve, including a deuce-point hold for Nezar for 2-1. However, Eriksson held for 2-2 and then collected consecutive deuce-point wins for 4-2. The remainder of the set was then on serve for his win. Eriksson again broke first in the second set for a 3-2 lead, but that was the first of four-straight breaks until Nezar snapped the string with a deuce-point hold for 5-4 when play stopped.
Earlier in doubles, Texas produced decisive results in all three matches, starting out with 4-0 leads in each of them. The first to finish was the No. 10 duo of Legout and Brown, who downed the No. 42 pair of Planinsek and Matic Kriznik, 6-1, at No. 1. The Longhorns jumped out to a 5-0 lead in that match with only the second game reaching deuce. The Crimson Tide earned one game on a hold for 5-1, but Texas served it out after that.
Gorzny and Braswell then clinched the point by the same score over Nezar and Zimnokh at No. 2. Texas pushed out to a 4-0 lead in that match before Alabama held for 4-1. The Longhorns then held at deuce and broke for the win.
The remaining doubles contest was also close to a Texas win with Bailly and Eriksson leading Aguiard and Foster, 5-1, at No. 3. The Longhorns broke on a deuce point to begin the match on the way to a 4-0 lead. The Crimson Tide then held for 4-1, but Texas did the same on a deuce point before play stopped.
The Longhorns will next return to the road for a pair of weekend matches at #29 Arkansas on Friday, March 21, at 5:30 p.m., and at #75 LSU on Sunday, March 23, at 12 p.m. CT.
