Cimusz, Kavan lead No. 2/2 Softball in first SEC series win

The Longhorns have won four consecutive games against Florida.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – There were a lot of questions for The University of Texas' softball program heading into its first-ever Southeastern Conference (SEC) series this weekend. Teagan Kavan and Katie Cimusz provided those answers as the second-ranked Longhorns took Saturday's two-game doubleheader at third-ranked Florida, 7-2 and 13-7, to not only win its first-ever SEC game but clinch its first-ever SEC series as well.
Relying on those who helped win the Big 12 Conference in 2024, the Texas duo of Mia Scott and Reese Atwood broke open a 1-1 tie in the top of the fourth inning of game on by combing to drive in five runs during the frame with Atwood's three-run home run being the big blow.
And despite Florida (27-4, 2-3) clawing back in the bottom half of the inning with a single run, Joley Mitchell pushed the Texas advantage back out to five in the top of the sixth by scoring Ashton Maloney on a sacrifice fly.
Kavan (11-1), the reigning SEC Pitcher of the Week, tossed 100 pitches in 4.2 innings of game one and faced three over the minimum, struck out five and scattered five singles to the fourth-highest scoring offense in the nation. She gave way to Mac Morgan with two on and two away in the bottom of the fifth and the third-year Longhorn ended the frame with just one pitch.
Morgan (S, 1) went on to allow just two singles – back-to-back two-out singles in the bottom of the sixth – en route to earning her sixth career save, tying for fourth on the program's career saves list.
Game two was more of a seesaw affair as Florida went up 2-0 after the first, before Texas took a 3-2 lead in the third, extended it to 6-2 in the fourth before Florida answered with a five-run fourth to take a 7-6 lead. Katie Cimusz immediately answered in the top of the fifth with a solo home run to take the game at 7-7, before the Longhorns busted it open with a six-run top of the sixth that featured Cimusz' second home run in as many at bats.
FROM HEAD COACH MIKE WHITE
"Obviously, it was a tough day, mentally draining, but it was a good win during the first game. Both teams hit the ball really well, so the second game was really back and forth for a while, then Teagan (Kavan) was able to work her way out of it to shut the door when we needed her. And then Katie Cimusz had a huge day for us as well."
FROM SENIOR KATIE CIMUSZ
"For me, I just wanted to be on time and be on plane with the pitches. I know I was a little behind on some during the first game and I wanted to look for pitches I could drive."
