Longhorns set to make history against Cardinal on September 7.
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas volleyball is set to make history, announcing Monday it will host its first-ever match at the 10,000-seat Moody Center this season. The opponent will be traditional power, nine-time NCAA Champion and Longhorn volleyball rival Stanford with the match played on Sunday, September 7. This will mark the 36th time Texas and Stanford have met in Volleyball, including facing each other in each of the last eight seasons (not including COVID year of 2020). Ticket information will be available later today.
After opening the season at the Opening Spike Classic against Creighton and Wisconsin, Texas hosts its first 'home' match of the year against the Cardinal in what head coach Jerritt Elliott hopes to be a sellout crowd of 10,000 fans.
"We have a great opportunity to bring volleyball to the biggest stage in Austin and what an awesome place to do it at the Moody Center," Elliott said. "We know how incredible our fans are in Gregory Gym, now it's time to bring that same energy across the street. We're hosting a fantastic opponent; it will be a truly special day, and we know this will draw the attention of the NCAA world. Sports fans everywhere should mark the calendar for this one. We can't wait to see Longhorn nation on September 7 and put a huge spotlight on our great sport."
Two of the premier and most accomplished programs in collegiate volleyball – and any sport for that matter – Texas and Stanford have combined for 14 National titles and 38 NCAA Final Four Appearances. Between them, the two programs have played for or won the NCAA Title in eight of the last 13 seasons with Texas winning back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023 as well as 2012 and Stanford winning consecutive crowns in 2018 and 2019 along with 2016. The Longhorns also played for the national championship three times in 2015, 2016 and 2020.
The two teams have met 36 times with the Cardinal boasting a 24-12 advantage. The Longhorns have faced the Cardinal six times in the last six seasons and have split the matches equally. The last postseason matchup saw Texas defeat Stanford 3-1 in California on their way to its fifth NCAA title.
The Longhorns are coming off a 20-7 season, reaching the NCAA Regional for the 21st consecutive season. Stanford ended last season with a 28-5 record and bowed out of the NCAA tournament in the Regional Final against Louisville.
"We have an incredible home court advantage with the best atmosphere in college volleyball at Gregory Gym, but what an awesome opportunity it is for Coach Elliott and our women's volleyball program to play a match at Moody Center," said UT Vice President and Lois and Richard Folger Athletics Director Chris Del Conte. "It will be an epic clash of titans showcasing and celebrating the great sport of volleyball. Our phenomenal fans pack The Greg for every match, they are the absolute best, and it's an electric environment. I know they will be excited to be a part of this historic match at Moody Center and bring their same patented passion and energy. It's going to be a truly special one to be a part of."
