Kavan tosses first career no-hitter, No. 1/1 Softball beats Missouri in five innings
04.05.2025 | Softball
Teagan Kavan joins Mac Morgan, Citlaly Gutierrez and Sophia Simpson as active Longhorns with a no-hitter.
COLUMBIA, Mo. – As if Teagan Kavan's name wasn't already sprinkled throughout Texas' softball record book prior to Saturday, the sophomore right-handed sharpied her name into it by tossing the 57th no-hitter in program history during the Longhorns' 8-0, five-inning win at Missouri. Kavan's no-hitter on Saturday was the first by a Longhorn pitcher since Mac Morgan no-hit Siena over seven innings on May 17, 2024.
Over the course of the 1-hour, 40-minute game, Kavan tossed 77 pitches to 17 Missouri batters. She forced two flyouts – both to Ashton Maloney in right field – and two groundouts: one to Mia Scott at third base and one to herself in the pitching circle. For the other 11 remaining outs, Kavan recorded those via strikeout. She did not allow a walk or hit a batter on the day either. Only three Tiger batters worked a count to three balls.
The only two Missouri baserunners came via two infield fielding errors: one by Kaydee Bennett at second base to the first batter of the game and then Mia Scott at third base with one away in the bottom of the fifth. Kavan struck out multiple batters in the same inning on four occasions, while striking out the side twice.
In between Kavan's first and 11th strikeout on the afternoon, the Texas offense rolled up four first-inning runs with the big blow coming via a three-run home run off the bat of Joley Mitchell. Reese Atwood added a solo home run two innings later, before Atwood, Katie Stewart and Kaydee Bennett all had run-scoring singles in the top of the fifth to extend the Longhorns' lead into run-rule territory.
FROM HEAD COACH MIKE WHITE
"Obviously, Teagan was just in control. You could have all the excuses with the temperatures or all the delays and everything else, but she was just down to business and able to shut Missouri down after we scored four runs in the first inning, which was huge because we were able to ride that momentum and keep it on our side."
FROM SOPHOMORE TEAGAN KAVAN
"It was cold, obviously. But we had been sitting for a while, so Coach White asked us if we were ready to go and kind of chomp at the bit a little and I think we were. For me, I was just trusting my stuff and trusting my defense. Obviously, the four runs in the first inning kind of took some weight off my shoulders, so I was just letting it roll and throwing what was working. I was hitting my locations and just trying to take it one pitch at a time."
