No. 1/1 Softball takes Sunday doubleheader, sweeps Missouri
04.06.2025 | Softball
Texas runs win streak to five in a row with 9th and 10th SEC victories.
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Looking to prolong its time atop the SEC standings, The University of Texas softball program won both games against Missouri, 4-3 and 3-1, to not only claim Sunday's doubleheader, but also sweep the three-game weekend series and add a ninth and tenth conference win to program's 2025 résumé.
Mirroring Saturday afternoon's start, Texas plated four first-inning runs to begin game one of the twin bill with Katie Stewart's two-out, three-run home run over the left-centerfield fence being the big blow. Stewart's 11th home run on the season came just five pitches after Joley Mitchell broke the 0-0 tie with a two-out single back up the middle to score Ashton Maloney.
The four-run Texas lead stood for nearly the entire duration of the two-hour, 10-minute, seven-inning contest until Missouri's Kara Daly sent a 1-0 pitch over the center field fence for a two-out, three-run home run to cut the Longhorn lead to one.
However, Teagan Kavan (S, 2) struck out Taylor Ebbs to give Texas its fourth consecutive SEC series victory.
Kavan, who threw a five-inning no-hitter on Saturday and then tossed 12 pitches in the bottom of the seventh in game one on Sunday, was given the starting pitching assignment for Texas as the Longhorns looked for a three-game sweep with a potential victory in game two.
Kavan (17-2) and Missouri starter Marissa McCann traded scoreless frames during the game's first three innings, before each surrendered solo home runs – Mia Scott for Texas, Madison Walker for the Missouri – in the fourth inning.
It wasn't until the top of the eighth that either team broke through in the run column, again, as Joley Mitchell drove in both Maloney and Kayden Henry on a sacrifice fly to right-centerfield and give the Longhorns a 3-1 advantage. The lead was more than enough for Kavan, who needed just 12 pitches to close the door on the Tiger offense.
FROM HEAD COACH MIKE WHITE
"Any kind of sweep in the SEC is difficult, especially on the road, because everyone is a very competitive team. (Missouri's Marissa McCann) came out in game two and threw a good game against us and was mixing it up quite a bit. Mia (Scott) gave us the lead with her home run, but they answered right back, so it was one of those games. But we were able to hang in there – mainly with Teagan (Kavan's) pitching; she did a great job for us."
FROM SOPHOMORE TEAGAN KAVAN
"(Missouri) had definitely seen me before, so I just wanted to go out there today and use different sequences. I was confident since I had faced them before and did well, but I really just wanted to utilize a different strategy and attack them in different ways."
GAME NOTES
- During her eight-inning performance in game two, Teagan Kavan recorded 13 strikeouts, which marked the second-most strikeouts in a single game for the sophomore right-hander after fanning 18 in nine innings of work against Texas Tech on Feb. 14, 2025.
- In 8.2 innings in the pitching circle throughout Sunday's doubleheader, the only time Teagan Kavan did not strike out at least one Missouri batter in an inning was the bottom of the seventh, when she retired the side on just seven pitches that did not leave the infield.
- With her three-run home run in the top of the first of game one, Katie Stewart became just the fourth student-athlete (Reese Atwood, Lindsey Stephens, Taylor Thom and Katie Stewart) in program history to drive in 60-or-more runs in a single season.
- By drawing a full-count walk in the top of the third during game one, Reese Atwood extended her on-base streak to 20 consecutive games, becoming the third different Longhorn student-athlete to have a 20-game on-base streak this season.
- It marks the first time in program history that Texas has had three student-athletes with an on-base streak of 20-or-more consecutive games played during the same season.
- By earning the win with her game two performance, Teagan Kavan was credited with her 37th career win, which ties the sophomore with Shea O'Leary (2019-22) and Amy Bradford (2002-05) for eighth on the program's career wins list.
