Texas’ five first-team all-region selections are most since 2009
AUSTIN, Texas – The University of Texas softball program featured six student-athletes on the three National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Central Teams, the organization announced Thursday afternoon. The six overall selections are the most by a single Texas team since the 2021 squad had seven honorees, while the five first-team student-athletes are the most by a Longhorn squad since the 2009 team featured five as well.
Teagan Kavan (Pitcher), Reese Atwood (Catcher), Mia Scott (Third Base), Kayden Henry (Outfield) and Ashton Maloney (Outfield) all earned NFCA All-Central First Team honors, while Katie Stewart (DP or Utility/Non-Pitcher) was selected to the NFCA All-Central Second Team.
The five first-team selections for Texas are the most by any softball program in the Central Region: Texas (5), Texas A&M (4), Texas Tech (2), Arkansas (1) and New Mexico State (1). When excluding the five Longhorns, the Texas program played at least one softball game against seven of the eight additional first-team selections this season.
It's the third career all-region honor for Scott, who was also selected to the second team in 2022 and 2023. Kavan, Atwood, Maloney and Henry all pick up their second career all-region selection, while this is the first career honor for Stewart.
The quintet of Scott (.438), Henry (.420), Maloney (.419), Atwood (.408) and Stewart (.362) are five of the top six Texas batters in terms of batting average. Scott leads the team in doubles (15); Atwood in home runs (17), Stewart in RBI (72); Maloney in hits (75) and Henry in runs scored (60).
Kavan paced the Longhorn pitching staff with a 21-4 record and 188 strikeouts in 150.2 innings pitched, while heading into the NCAA Tournament with a 2.46 ERA after battling through the toughest softball league in the nation.
